Tonight Mr. Gobble became the first reliever in the Retrosheet era (1956-2008) to pitch 1 inning or less and give up 10 runs. :highfive:

Just saw Tony Pena Jr relieved him.
From what I saw on Baseball Tonight, Pena's pitches didn't look half bad.

Was Kansas City so short of relievers that they left him flapping in the wind for 6 runs before recording an out?

After 2 outs, he walked in the 3B runner. Nunez relieves him, allows 3 more runs before Sheffield grounds out.
Since the last guy to score was walked with the bases loaded, that run is attributable to him.
I have trouble understanding why Gobble wasn't removed after 2-3 runs. His mopup duty wasn't exactly performed efficiently.

He threw one perfect inning. Anybody else see some irony there?

The Royals bullpen had been stressed a little since the ASG and Hillman just threw Gobble to the wolves. It wasn't like the Royals were going to comeback and win that game. That performance will most likely be Gobble's swan song.

Yes, and had he not been optioned to Omaha (AAA) prior to the game he could have been used.

This is also one of those what I like to call an ESPN overblown moment. Gobble may have been the first reliefer in 50 years to do this but some starters have also done it. So it's not like this hasn't occurred before.

In SIX innings

But all ten in one inning
So this is actually the 3rd time already this season that a pitcher has given up 10+ runs in a single inning?

I think just two. The Jason Jennings one was from last year. Andy Pettitte gave up 10 runs in a game, but not in one inning

Bronson Arroyo gave up 11 but he pitched into the 2nd inning (didn't get more than 3 outs though).
