Second big name acquisition for the Brew Crew. I feel that it is a pretty good deal for Milwaukee and Doug Melvin, as Durham has quietly posted a .382 OBP that would look nice in front of Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder. It's not like Durham is extremely overpaid- he's making only $7,500,000 this season, of which the Brewers will be on the hook for about $3,000,000. In return, the Brewers only gave up a 26 year old lefty who's only recently pitched in AAA, and a center fielder who's hitting .230 in AA ball. The Giants probably could have done better.

I believe he's going to platoon with Rickie Weeks. Either way, advantage Brewers

Milwaukee is in a weird situation - they are loaded with young talent, but not much of it is locked up. Braun is, Fielder isn't (and he's a Boras client) and Hart isn't. Moving down the list, Weeks isn't and neither is Hardy. Sheets is a free agent, as will C.C. be. Cameron too, well he has an option, but it won't be picked up at 10M. Tons of their role players are FAs too. It seems like they are really going for it, as it isn't a guarantee they'll have this core together again.

I wouldn't mind seeing him replace Weeks at second. Ever since Rickie's wrist surgery last year he hasn't been hitting that well, aside from a hot streak earlier this season where he lead the Brewers in home runs for about a week.

He didn't hit that well last year, right? Wasn't he sent to AAA in August?

If my memory recalls, he had this wrist surgery, then came back and hit horribly, and then was sent to Nashville for some 'rehab' starts after maybe a week or some.
He's never played in more than 120 games in a year, and usually plays around 90. He's always been in a platoon with somebody, mainly Craig Counsel the last two seasons.
He has some home-run pop in his bat, and I think he's decent on the basepaths. If his BA was just 25 points higher, I'd be happy with him as our lead-off man. But we ARE in a playoff race, not rebuilding.

.280 lifetime with some pop from the left side - he will be a presence as a lefty off the bench.
as long as his legs hold up, durham'll be a good aquisition for milwaukee.
i am glad that the teams agreed to finalize the deal after today's game to give durham a chance to say his goodbyes to his teammates.

Yeah, that was classy.
I like Ray's OBP too. Gotta get men on for Braun and Fielder.

WOW. They have room to fill next year! They can still have almost $25M left if they can afford the same payroll as this season next season. If they would hold on to Durham next season, weeks would probaly go.

Durham is having a nice bounce back season from a dreadful 2007. Weeks is not having the best of seasons this year, either. If they platoon these two Weeks is going to be doing a lot of sitting over the next three months.

Really?
What would it cost to retain guys currently on the roster, estimating in M per year....
Sabathia: 12
Sheets: 10
Fielder 15
Hart: 9
Hardy 6

replace a starting CF
Torres can close again for 3.75, or you can find a replacement for twice that.
either resign or replace all sort of spare parts, bullpen guys and role players.
Giving Suppan 12.5 per before extending Prince was a good idea after all, who would guessed?...
Actually, I like the Brew Crew, I hope they can retain their most important pieces.
There is no way Sabathia and Sheets will sign for anything less than 15 million/yr. I wouldn't be surprised if they got closer to 20 million than 15.

Perhaps - though C.C. Sabathia is not going to get more than Johan did. And, teams will be very wary to give out big $ and lots of years to Sheets knowing his injury history. If Sheets gets in the vicinity of 15 per, I'm guessing it would be a team choosing to pay more per year for fewer years in order to avoid entering a long term contract with a guy who has such a rep for being on the DL.
Either way, if you're correct, it only further establishes my original point.
