Picks that instantly bewilder me are George Sisler (here due to a look at superficial stats), Judy Johnson (questionable credentials) and two pitchers that might not even make my top fifty, Bob Lemon and Red Ruffing.

There's pretty much no room for relievers on this list which is somewhat expected although Wilhelm would've been a great choice in order to rectify this. Also, the omissions list calls out players like Rizzuto, Hunter and Hoyt while ignoring Arky Vaughan all together!

Overall, this is a pretty good attempt that could've been worse. I'll say about four-fifths of it is absolutely correct although there's about 60 names here that would be on anybody's list so it isn't that hard to score an 80%.

No problem with Sisler, he certainly belongs in that list, but your right about Johnson, Lemon, and Ruffing being questionable. John Ward should probably be added to that questionable list as well

The list doesn't call out the omissions of Jesse Burkett, Sam Crawford, or Johnny Mize either.
OK, maybe they inadvertently overlooked those players, but how do you knowingly leave Al Simmons off?

Frank Thomas is not mentioned.

--This seems like an excellent opportunity for us to come up with our own 100 man Hall of Fame:). I don't have time to put one togehter and post it now, but I'll do one later or tomorrow or something when I have an hour or so free. Top 100 eligible players (I'll add a list of not yet eliglble player who are likley to bounce somebody oout of the top 100 too).

Thomas is a glaring omission in the not yet retired section (maybe Frank Thomas, in Swahili, reads, "Derek Jeter" :hide:).

Bagwell is left off too.

Perhaps most counterintuitive, Smoltz is there, but Glavine is not.

Judy Johnson doesn't belong in the top 250, much less the top 100.

Guys who I think are HOF worthy, but not top 100:
Cool Papa Bell
Lou Brock
Ray Dandridge
Leon Day
George Sisler
Wee Willie Keeler
Buck Leonard
Brooks Robinson
Ozzie Smith
Bill Terry

Some guys who strike me as serious oversights (and I'm probably missing a few):
Robin Roberts
Arky Vaughn
Sam Crawford
Johnny Mize
Ed Delahanty
Bullet Joe Rogan
Paul Waner
Cristobal Torriente

The latter two lists aren't in any particular order.

The families of Leon Day, Bob Lemon and John Smoltz should be pleased.
Terry and Traynor, can't leave them out!

I'll pass over the first two generations.
They passed over Ed Delahanty. No excuse for that.

Arky Vaughn, George Davis, and Bill Dahlen finished 4-5-6 in the shortstops poll at the Hall of Merit. The number of shortstops may be low, too, considering the prominence of the position. Eleven of 112 counting Ernie Banks, John Ward, Robin Yount, and Alex Rodriguez one each.

add:
good trades
Ray Dandridge, Judy Johnson, and Pie Traynor for Vaughn, Davis, and Dahlen
Terry for Delahanty
I'll leave the pitchers, wondering why they expect letters about Herb Pennock.

I see the first hundred are limited to Hall of Fame members, so they ruled out a category that includes Dahlen.

Both should be there, with about 10 more pitchers. Pitchers are very underepresented on this list. Only 22% of the top 100.

Sosa would make it but McGwire doesn't? Come on now...

Like most have said, the two that struck me as the worst picks there are Judy Johnson and Bob Lemon.

jimalbright posted lists of 10 and 8.
Identifying a ten for ten trade is a reasonable way of approximating a top 100 without doing all the work.

The Newsday list is pretty good, better than anyone else gets into print.

Although a notch below Palmeiro and Cicotte could be on this list too.

You really think so? I don't know, they got about 75 obvious picks then stumbled at the margins.

A quickie run-through gives me 22 names that seem to be clearly not among the top 100 HOF players:

Cool Papa Bell
Lou Brock
Mordecai Brown
Ray Dandridge
Leon Day
Dizzy Dean
Larry Doby
Bill Foster
Jim Galvin
Judy Johnson
Willie Keeler
King Kelly
Bob Lemon
Eddie Plank
Brooks Robinson
Red Ruffing
George Sisler
Ozzie Smith
Bill Terry
Pie Traynor
John Ward
Early Wynn

If Kid Nichols isn't a Top 100 guy it must be a really tough list.

It looks to me like two of the key areas of difficulty are the Negro Leagues (omissions and inclusions) and the 19th century (omissions). That is no surprise to me, except maybe the poor inclusions from the Negro Leagues.
