Here's a pretty interesting (albiet, short) piece on the free swingers in the major leagues. If you follow the link in the article, you can access the full top-10 and non-top-10:

Personally, I'd rather my team (as the Yanks and As do) fully of patient hitters. Mostly because they would keep my blood pressure down, but what do you all think? Is it more of a 'What works for that hitter' type of thing?

I never care much for these lists of extreme players. Someone has to be the bookends, right? Two notes of some interest: note how many picky hitters are either current or former A's. And Josh Hamilton has been going outside the strike zone quite a bit.
But is that a bad thing? Maybe those pitches are just off the plate, and maybe those are the pitches without a whole lot of movement. Only Josh Hamilton knows.

Different things work for different hitters. All things being equal, I'd rather have a hitter who was patient, but all things are rarely equal. I definitely agree that being aggressive outside the zone works for some players.

We know the location and movement of virtually every pitch thrown in the majors this year, so anyone who wants to know can know.
It looks to me like Josh Hamilton doesn't hit too well on balls out of the zone:
