View Full Version : 1969 All Star Ballot
leecemark
07-16-2008, 08:15 AM
--The voting is now open for the 1969 CKL All Stars. We will not be going with separate teams for the 2 leagues, just a single 30 man team as we have in the past. The only change will be that instead of voting for a 3rd player at 2 spots the DH and Wild Card will be a separate ballot slot. You don't have to vote for anyone who is a primary DH, although you certainly can. Its just that players at that "posiiton" will be competing with the excess talent from other positions for the final roster spots.
--Ballots should consist of;
2 catchers
2 firstbasemen
2 secondbasemen
2 thirdbasemen
2 shortstops
2 leftfielders
2 centerfielders
2 rightfielders
2 DH/wild card players
8 starting pitchers
4 relief pitchers
--Votes will be counted as 5 points for first team and 3 points for second team on position players, 8,7,6,etc for SP and 4,3,2,1 for RP.
--The All Star break actually begins on July 31 this year, with 9 days/series to get you ballot in. Thats alot of baseball between now and then. I'm going to hold off on voting til closer to the break, but if you haven't been checking in regularly I'd rather have an early ballot than none at all.

--This is not meant to be a ballot. You may vote for whomever you wish. Alot of guys are playing posiiton other than the primary one they are listed at though, so this is a litttle guide to who is playing where. Anybody who is playing a posiiton regularly and playing it reasonably well is listed here.
C: Johnny Bench, Frank Fernandez, Tom Haller, Tim McCarver, Manny Saguillen, Randy Hundley
1B: Harmon Killebrew, Frank Howard, Boog Powell, Wes Parker, Willie McCovey, Norm Cash, Lee May
2B: Ron Hunt, Horace Clarke, Ken Boswell, Davey Johnson, Dick McAuliffe, Joe Morgan, Rod Carew, Glen Beckert
3B: Tony Perez, Ken McMullen, Sal Bando, Ron Santo, Dick Allen
SS: Don Kessinger, Mark Belanger, Rico Petrocelli, Leo Cardenas, Jerry Kenney
LF: Cleon Jones, Roy White, Carl Yastrzemski, Billy Williams, Reggie Smith, Frank Robinson
CF: Jim Northrup, Alex Johnson, Larry Hisle, Rick Monday, Jimmy Wynn
RF: Tony Oliva, Roberto Clemente, Bobby Tolan, Pete Rose, Hank Aaron, Reggie Jackson, Rusty Staub
DH: Don Clendenon, Willie Stargell, Mike Hegan, Mack Jones, Mike Epstein
SP: Ken Holtzman, Bill hands, Ron Reed, George Stone, Sam McDowell, Bill Singer, Gary Gentry, Tom Seaver, Juan Marichal, Larry Deirker, Denny Lemaster, Phil Neikro, Fergie Jenkins, Tom Pheobus, Dick Selma, Denny McLain
RP: Dean Chance, Ron Taylot, Chcuk Taylor, Dick Hall, Ken Tatum, Hoyt Wilhelm, Ray Washburn, Bob Miller
--If I've overlooked any reasonable candidates please feel free to point them out. Stump for the guys who have really got the job done for your team too. Or if your team is not getting the job done then stump for the guy who is playing the least bad.:) There is no requirement to have a rep from every team on your ballot, but most of us have tried to do so in the past. That may be a little harder to do with 16 teams now though.

C: Johnny Bench 48.6 (McCarver 31.0)
1B: Harmon Killebrew 65.3 (McCovey 65.2)
2B: Horace Clarke 59.3 (Morgan 45.5)
3B: Sal Bando 61.9 (Perez 59.1)
SS: Rico Petrocelli 65.3 (Cardenas 37.0)
LF: Frank Robinson 62.0 (Reggie Smith 59.3)
CF: Jim Northrup 54.7 (Wynn 52.6)
RF: Hank Aaron 69.0 (Oiva 63.6)
DH: Mike Epstein 60.1 (Stargell 51.6)
--Bench, Clarke and Petrocelli have huge leads over the next best at their position. Its hard to imagine voting for somebody else. Bando's is significant, especially with the defensive difference (Bando is not a Gold Glover, but Perez is making an error on more than 10% of his chances). The outfielders and firstbasemen are much closer, including several players further back than #2, and those votes should be very interesting. We'll see who gets hot the next few series'.

I'd have to ask that Fiore be included at first. He's among the leaders in BA and OBP and has a .917 OPS.

Probably some of the same stuff as when you put two of your own CFs on your ballot instead of Jim Northrup, who has a higher OPS and more RC than both of them. ;)

--Fiore is 4th in OPs amoung 1B's and the others have played significantly more than he has. There are 6 firstbasemen in the top 25 in Runs Created and Fiore is not one of them. Nice season for a platoon guys, but he didn't seem like a strong candidate for the All Star when I was making up the list of suggested candidates. That said, that list was not the ballot. You can vote for anyone. As the hometown ballot stuffers in Kyleville have demonstrated:cap:.

Looking through quickly I see some surprises, especially in the pitching. Guess that goes to show that the hitters are a bit more consistent in DM than the pitchers. There will be some tough decisions to make at a few positions....

C
Johnny Bench - easily the top choice
Joe Torre - forgot him on prelim, but he is close to Bench with bat anyway
1B
Harmon Killebrew - pulling away from tough field
Willie McCovey - almost a coin flip fo numer 2 in a VERY deep crop, apologies to Frank Howard, Boog Powell, Norm Cash and Wes Parker
2B
Horace Clarke - led Badgers early contention
Dick McAuliffe - MVP caniddate if he didn't have to sit so much
3B
Sal Bando - Knights MVP so far
Tony Perez - on fire since joining Gold Sox
SS
Rico Petrocelli - actually a small disappontment, but still an easy choice
Don Kessinger - very good offense and EX defense
LF
Billy Williams - reigning MVP leads CKL in RBI
Frank Robinson - best bat on best team
--Apologies to Roy White and Reggie Smith
CF
Jim Northrup - biggest bat in the midfield
Don Buford - Brawlers token rep
--Wynn, Hisle and Monday all lose out to affirmative action program:cap:
RF
Tony Oliva - strong MVP candidate
Reggie Jackson - young slugger having breakout season
--the talent here rivals 1B for depth. Aaron gets WC/DH nod. Rose and Clemente get a pat on the back:cap:.
DH/WC
Hank Aaron - best Legend batter can't be left off
Mike Epstein - huge year at new DH position
SP
Ron Reed - shockingly great season so far
Juan Marichal - #1 in wins, IP and CG
Denny McLain - holding Thunder staff together
Bill Hands - ace of league's top staff
Tom Seaver - quietly having a great season
Fergie Jenkins - 17-3 meant I had to edit ballot to get him on
Sam McDowell - Sudden Sam firevballing his way onto editted ballot
Dick Selma - replaces slumping Hotlzma as HC ace
RP
Ken Tatum - rookie as dominated outof the pen
Dick Hall - vet having his best season
Ron Taylor - AC's token, but is leadignlead in saves for a team not winning many games

Rico Petrocelli - actually a small disappontment, but still an easy choice
He was ripping it up earlier in the season, but I see your point. He's played alright defense at a premier position and has hit well too. My hitters (aside from Hisle) have been disappointing in general.

I'm sure many will say "Too many homer votes", but every one with the possible exception of Jenkins has a good argument for their inclusion. And 17-3 is a pretty good argument by itself.
C: Johnny Bench Young catcher starting to shine.
Joe Torre Easy choice as backup.
1B: Harmon Killebrew Defense better than I thought it might be, and offensive numbers are too huge to ignore.
Willie McCovey Extremely close between Stretch and Boog, and Stretch gets the hometown vote. (Sorry, Jason).
2B: Joe Morgan Edges out Horace by a hair as the starter; probably a hometown factor here as well.
Horace Clarke Quietly having a huge season for the Badgers.
My apologies to Dick McAuliffe, whose offensive numbers are far above these two, but who only has about half the PA they do.
3B: Tony Perez Having an outstanding season.
Sal Bando Knights young third sacker is on his way up.
Apologies to my own Ron Santo, who is having a decent season. The other two are just better this year (so far).
SS: Rico Petrocelli Blowing all other shortstops away offensively, and playing a decent shortstop to boot. Easiest choice so far.
Don Kessinger Best of the rest. Quietly having a very nice season for the Leafs.
LF: Roy White I didnt realize until now what a top notch season hes having.
Reggie Smith A bit of a homer vote over Frank Robinson.
CF: Jim Northrup An ex-Legend. Having a fine season in his second year with the Gold Sox.
Rick Monday Many will view this as a homer vote, but he has started 68 games and it would be more if not for the 16 game injury. His OPS is 104 points higher than Wynn, who was my third choice and has played more.
RF: Reggie Jackson Redbirds happy to have him this year.
Tony Oliva Skipjacks sorry not to have him this year.
DH: Hank Aaron Huge numbers, had to get him in here somewhere.
Mike Epstein Several deserving, but hes been a tremendous force this season.
Starting Pitchers: Ron Reed 12-1 record and leading the Gamblers charge to a division title.
Bill Hands Third man in the Legends big three is having the best season so far stat wise.
Bill Singer Excellent season for Diablos.
Denny Lemaster Surprisingly good season for the surprise ace of the Badgers
Jim Palmer Also helping the Cloverleafs to a fine season.
Dick Selma - 13-2 record helps the Cider to the leagues best record.
Denny McLain A deserving Thunder representative.
Fergie Jenkins A definite homer vote, no doubt. But hes 17-3 for my Legends, so no apologies for wanting him on my ballot.
Relievers: Ken Tatum Not many saves, but helping the Gamblers out just fine.
Dick Hall A bright spot for the Shoeless Joes.
Chuck Taylor Another reason the Leafs have a top notch record.
Eddie Watt Regretting that trade this season, as I could sure use him now.

Finally looked at the other votes after posing my ballot (I always make my ballot and post it before seeing who every one else voted for), and I'm surprised by a couple of things.
I thought my putting Morgan ahead of Clarke at second was a homer vote, and perhaps it is to a degree, but I was totally shocked to see no other votes at all for Joe. He has the highest OBP and slugging percentage of anyone not named McAuliffe (in twice as many plate appearances); leads all second basemen in HR, runs, RBI, Walks and SB. The ONLY stat Clarke has him on is batting average, but Joe has 74 walks to Horace's 23 and thus has a higher OBP. McAuliffe was actually my initial pick until I saw how few PAs he had. If he even had 75% of Morgan or Clarke's PAs he would've been an easy pick, but when he has only half as many I just couldn't do it.
The other thing that surprised me was the support for Rick Monday. I thought his lower number of PAs compared to some others would hurt him more than it has in the voting.Too bad he lost all those games to injury; I'd really like to see what his stats would look like!
