There will be a large parade up Manhattan's famed 5th Avenue (home to countless other NYC parades) beginning at 1pm ET, just over 3 hours from now. The game itself starts at 8pm ET.

Please discuss anything related to this All-Star game, past games, All-Star trivia or any other kind of fun banter and shared moments that friendly fans often have when meeting new friends.

Anything about the player selections, saying goodbye to Yankee Stadium II or anything related is fine. :)

Once the game begins, please feel free to post meaningful comments (ie, situational pitcher-batter matchups, what you would do instead). Hopefully more substantial than what one could simply get by browsing the online play-by-play listings.

Enjoy the game, folks, let it be a great one! :D

Where'd everybody go? I wonder if I should just go looking for all the people lurking out there. Nobody's posting in here? If nobody posts, should I go find a stink bomb to get everyone out of the surrounding bushes and into this thread? Now then, *COME OUT, COME OUT, WHEREVER YOU ARE*! :D :waving: :p

Oh yeah, the All-Star Parade is over, was up 6th Ave, not 5th Ave, as I'd mistakenly reported earlier. Yogi, Winfield and many others were there.

Now let's get the game on.

For no reason other than my being an AL homer, I pick them to win. Oh and Rivera throws the final pitch. The NL closer can't close unless they've got thr lead. :p

If the NL wins, it's a total fluke. The AL would easily win any series (as evidenced by interleague play)....I think the success of the AL in the previous contests and interleague play for many moons is enough for me to believe they'll add another victory to their belt.

If Francona is such a homer that he'll have Papelbon close, then that would rank up there, or even higher than Torre having around 10 Yankees around 2002 or 2004 roster. K-Rod may be more qualified amongst the younger guys.

blacksilverfan12
07-15-2008, 04:32 PM
My guess is that it's going to be a left-handed hitter, with the short porch and all. That gives Ichiro a chance. My guess would be Utley in the NL, Hamilton in the AL

I wouldn't count the Interleague wins, since those are entire teams, and these guys tonight were hand-picked.

The NL winning an ASG in recent years seems rare, so that's a good thing to base it on, I believe.

I really want Edinson Volquez to face Josh Hamilton. One of the best trades in history and both face each other less than a year from the trade and both have less than 2 years MLB experience.

The NL will win tonight since they won the Legends and Celebrity Softball Game.

Bob is just one of those living legends who connect us all the way back to DiMaggio's final year, which was Mantle's (and Mays') rook year. Bob is our version of Vin Scully.

Which announcers are you faniliar with? I really liked Harry Caray, and Ernie Halwell.

Mostly Vin, being a Dodger fan. I've heard Harry Caray, Harry Kalas. Not too familiar with Harwell. I like the old broadcasters. Nothing annoys me more than hearing young broadcasters scream like they're being mutilated when somebody does something exciting

You know, now that I think about it this might be the one year that I wouldn't mind seeing the AL lose.

-Mariners out of it, homefield advantage in the World Series unimportant.

-Only one Mariner playing in the game.

-Would be funny to see Yankee Stadium be the site of an AL loser in it's last year.

-Give the NL a chance to win for once.

The only thing that might change my mind at this point would be if Ichiro does something spectacular in his next two at-bats, and with his play in the field, to put him in the running for MVP. Then the need for an AL would be important.

Wow nice play. If only Joe Buck didn't react like this was a spring training game. A strike-him-out throw-him-out in the top of the 9th inning in a game that "counts", you can raise your voice a little Mr. Buck.

I'm laughing at the "Overrated" chant

It's part of the game. Just like the "Yankees suck" chant, which I too find quite funny.

I haven't followed the Paplebon story too closely (actually, not at all, to be honest) so I know very little about the context. But from what I've seen in headlines, it appears Paps said some things that could easily have been taken a certain way and even more easily taken out of context. He then realized it and came out and softened his tone. I honestly felt a little bad for him on the mound tonight, but I don't know what everyone expected. He's a Red Sox (Sock?) who made a contoversial comment before the game. He got booed. Big deal.

This game is fixed. Wagner's 1-2 pitch was a strike. Guzman was safe. Wright was called out on a ball. I hope this game ends in a tie just to embarass Selig more. He'll probably make the winner of the ASG start the WS 1-0.

That's the problem with headlines, especally ones in the NYDN.

"We've both earned that right; us, by winning the World Series and having the opportunity of having our manager there and our team being represented, and Mariano by what he's done for this role, we're in Yankee Stadium and blah, blah, blah," Papelbon said. "It's not that easy. Everybody thinks it's a cut and dry answer, but it's not.

"If I was managing the team, I would close," Papelbon said. "I'm not managing the team, so it don't matter."

SOURCE (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/allstar08/news/story?id=3488087)

I've been trying to find what the heck he said before that, but you know what? No one published it. Hmmm....

Anyways, the press was in the room when Papelbon saw the headline of the Daily News:

“What the (expletive!)”

“It just kind of (ticks) me off because if that gets (expletive) written and I’m riding in a (expletive) parade today with my wife (Ashley), so she doesn’t feel safe because some (expletive) from the Daily News says I want to close the game and that ain’t true,” he said. “See what Im saying?”

The parade Papelbon referred to was the one in downtown Manhattan this afternoon, showcasing the players participating in tonight’Jonas All-Star Game.

“That was an easy headline for that (expletive) to say, ‘Yeah, Papelbon wants to close,’ ” he said. “Of course I do, that’s my competitive nature. But I’m stepping away and saying I don’t need to close.”

Papelbon pointed out that his biggest problem with the Daily News story and presentation was how it affected his wife, who is due with the couple’s first child on New Year’s Day.

“My wife wasn’t comfortable,” Papelbon said. “She’s pregnant with a baby. It (ticks) me off. So some (expletive) from the Daily News can get his headline.

“It kind of (ticks) you off when your family gets involved like that and you’re trying to enjoy an experience with your family and you have a wife who is pregnant who doesn’t feel safe riding in a red carpet event with you. ... How would you feel?”

Papelbon also reiterated his stance on who should close out tonight’s game, insisting he has no problem with Rivera finishing a potential AL win.

“I understand what it’s about to put in your time and pay your dues in this game,” he said. “If you were to ask me, of course I would want to close. I’m not going to back down from anything. But that’s not what the (expletive) was said. It was an easy headline for that (expletive).”

Source (http://news.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view.bg?articleid=1107261)

Looks to me like Papelbon made one little comment suggesting he was one of the premier closers in the game and a world champion and maybe he had earned the right to close the game, and the New York Daily Tabloi....ahem... News made a cover story out of it.

Here's an idea, a couple of years ago before the NHL officially made it a rule, they're All-Star game was tied after overtime so they put in the shootout, 5 vs. 5. Well, we should have a HR derby to decide the winner. Let's put Pujols, Berkman, Uggla, Wright, and Braun against Nathan, Papelbon, F. Rodriguez, Rivera, and Soria. Those are the hitters for this HR derby.

And how is that a fact??
Johan would be on the roster if he were a better pitcher.

He knows almost all of the AL hitters, is left handed, and is on 5 days rest. He would be on the team if he people looked past his W/L record and saw the stats that actually matter like ERA. You can't convince me or anyone Brian Wilson and Carlos Marmol deserve to be on the team more than Santana.

I heard they was talk that Clint Hurdle tried to get Johan to replace Lincecum. Is Johan even in the New York area right now?

He probably is. He lives in Venezuela which is a long flight. He's probably asleep now. But by the time he gets up, showers, and gets to the stadium it'll be going on. They could always bring him in by helicopter. That'd be so cool.

Nightmare game for Uggla, but he's gotten away with it so far. Makes me wonder if he's tightening up a little.

Why is Marmol an All Star? The only more questionable All Star is Jason Varitek (who has to be one of the most questionable of all time).

They need to have a rule where if the game has gone to a certain point, you can reinsert position players that you've removed. At this point, I don't want to keep watching the last guys that were added to the team AB after AB, I want to see the big names. What sense does it make that A-Rod, Berkman and Manny get 2 ABs and Michael Young, Corey Hart, and Nate McClouth getting 4 or more, and at the most dramatic moments. That's not what the fans want to see.

Also, they need to expand the rosters or else drop that every team needs a representative rule. When they expanded the league in the 90s they didn't expand the All Star roster to take into account the additional required spots. Adding a spot or two would make the pitching situations less dicey in extra inning games. The last thing Francona probably wants to do now is have to use Scott Kazmir for more than an inning, if at all.

EDIT: Santana should be on the roster over Marmol. Santana is 4th in the NL in ERA, 9th in WHIP, 7th in Ks, 6th in IP.

Wow, thew AL has bar far the better team on the field right now. They still have Sizemore, Kinsler, Drew, and Moureau. The NL has a bunch of "no-name" guys other than Tejeda.

thems the rules. Hurdle had to pick the next pick on the players ballot when Wood went down with injury. That was marmol.

Didn't realize.

I still feel strongly though that in a rare event like this where the game goes to a ridiculous length, managers should be able to reinsert players. People want to see the big names in these big moments, they shouldn't be relegated to being distant memories.

I also believe the rosters should be expanded, to account for the league's expansion last decade, and to safeguard against the problem Terry Francona is currently facing with Scott Kazmir.

I really want to see Fox cut to Selig trying to sneak out of Yankee Stadium with a Bobby V. like fake 'stach and a trenchcoat on.

Selig: Noooooo!!!!! My master plan is ruined! What will I do now?!?

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

Yeah, you bet I want a tie game. I want this to blow up in Bud's face so bad! His reaction will be priceless! Come on you guys! Keep this thing going! :dance

Jeez, this game just keeps going....

If we actually get a result, it's sort of a shame that the stars of the game will have no impact. this game will get decided by the likes of a Guzman, a Longoria or a Quintin, instead of a Rodriguez, Ramirez or Jeter. Just longing back to the days when Mays would play the whole game. <sigh>

This is a classic, I absolutely love it. If Kazmir goes over his count, I hope they put a position player in.

They could either have one of the best All Star Games in history, or a PR disaster.

Meh don't blame me blame the players.
Besides if Santana was in the NL wouldn't be guaranteed a victory.
That's why i meant about the "FACT" part.

Yes, allow players to be re-inserted, most definitely. There oughta be a law.

Yup. I suppose one thing they could do is make it so pitchers that go on Sunday cannot be active for the All Star game and have to be replaced. Seems kind of unfair to the pitcher though, but realistically, what team would want their starter to pitch just two days later? If this had been a normal game, using guys like Kazmir, Webb, and Lincecum (if he made it) wouldn't be issues anyway as they likely would have sat it out, so why not just replace them?

Yes, allow players to be re-inserted, most definitely. There oughta be a law.

Wouldn't work for pitchers of course, but with position players, I'd much rather see the big names up in these big moments then the end of the bench getting 4 or 5 ABs. I'd say if the game goes past 10 innings, you should be able to reinsert players.
