I saw the first commercial for it today during the HR Derby, supposed to start Janurary 1, 2009.

Here's the best article I could find about it:

http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/article/58507

MLB Network plans to begin televising Jan. 1 to more than 50 million U.S. homes on digital or expanded basic platforms, making it by far the most successful network launch in cable TV history.

Early programming will include portions of the 2009 World Baseball Classic and a nonexclusive Saturday night, regular-season game package. Complementing that will be a mix of highlights, studio programming, international and development league games, and archival material. Also in the works is a nightly news and highlight show patterned after ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight.”

*mods, if you want to move this to the Books & TV forum, that's cool. I just figured this is such a huge and exciting topic that it should go in current events instead.

I'm very excited. If the quality is even half of that of NFL Network, this is going to kick some serious ass.

Now that's what I am talking about!

I skimmed through the whole story, but I must ask, will Directtv carry the channel?

Reading through the article, DirecTV is an integral part of the package. As a subscriber, I am really happy about this. I've watched both the NFL and NHL Networks and thought that any venture like this in Baseball would be a real dream come true. I'm glad they're getting this all together. It looks like it'll be fun.

Hendo's right, and I'll add that if they have as much vintage game footage as the NHL Network regularly does, it'll make up for the squalid farce that ESPN Classic has become over the last few years.

Probably.

The bigger question, is that my cable provider, Time Warner Cable, carry it? They spent the entire past football season debating with the Big Ten Network and the NFL Network, preventing us from watching Wisconsin Badger Football games and one Packer game.

Since I love baseball more than football, if TWC doesn't carry the MLB Network, I will go to satellite.
