Dick Bartell played 18 seasons in the majors, from 1927 to 1946. In that time, he collected 2165 hits and he hit .284. Mostly a shortstop, Bartell appeared in two All-Star games, and he was a solid postseason hitter, batting .294 in three World Series.
He is statistically similar to four Hall of Fame players - Red Schoendienst, Billy Herman, Joe Sewell and Dave Bancroft.
Bartell did a couple of things really well - for example, get hit by a pitch. He led the league in that category five times. He also had a propensity for the sacrifice hit, with his 269 being 25th all-time.
The Baseball Page ranks Rowdy Richard as being the 38th best shortstop of all-time.
In total, he received a whopping three votes for the BBHOF.
So, should Dick Bartell be in the Hall of Fame?

3 100 Run seasons. Only 2 years with an OPS+ above the league average. A player like that would have to be a phenomenal defensive whiz. As far as I can tell, that was not the case. Bartell is no where near the HOF, IMO.

On a separate note, maybe you could start comparing players who had similar careers or played similar positions to each other. These stand alone threads don't seem to be generating much conversation.

Bartell was only an average offensive player. I don't think he was a good pick. For me to change my mind, you would have to convice me he was on the level of Luis Aparicio/Ozzie Smith on defense. He certainly had the range, but his Fielding Percentage was only a tad above league, so . . .

Hmmmm. The guy was a SS who garnered 7000+ AB's with a slightly below average production. If you compare him to all SS's from 1920 to 1950 who had at least 6000+ AB's the only ones superior to him with a bat were Arky Vaughan, Joe Cronin, Lou Boudreau, Joe Sewell and maybe Travis Jackson. And all those guys are in the HoF. He does have in his Top Ten comparables list Schoendienst, Sewell, Herman and Bancroft. Might be worth some deeper review.

Travis Jackson is about even with Bartell, but a cut below Vaughn, Cronin, Boudreau, and Sewell.
Bartell isn't as bad as I initially thought, but there are shortstops outside the HOF that are better than Bartell (and Bancroft, Rizzuto, and other SSs in this line). Alan Trammell is one. Ray Chapman and Cecil Travis are, IMO, two more. Davey Concepcion is better than any of these guys.

To everyone reading this thread, I would suggest
(1) do not organize a campaign to get Dick Bartell into the HOF. He's probably up there laughing at the very notion.
(2) do buy a copy of Rowdy Richard. Good stories and an inside look at baseball in the '30s.

I'm sure he was a good player but I don't have him HOF worthy with a rating in the 6000's hard to justify for me.
