NEW YORK (AP)—Carlos Marmol became the eighth Cubs player on the NL All-Star team when he was selected Sunday to replace injured Chicago teammate Kerry Wood.
Marmol was picked because he was the relief pitcher with the highest vote on the player ballot. He is the only pitcher in the game who isn’t a starter or a closer.
His selection was announced one day after he wasted a 7-2 lead at Wrigley Field against San Francisco in a game the Cubs went on to win 8-7 in 11 innings.
Marmol, booed when he left the mound Saturday, is 2-3 with a 4.13 ERA and three saves. He had a 1.69 ERA in April and 1.93 in May, but it was 7.36 in June and 13.50 in July.
Before this year, the most All-Stars for the Cubs was six in 1936 and 1988. Outfielder Alfonso Soriano (broken hand), who was voted to the NL starting lineup, will miss the game because of a broken hand.
The 1958 Yankees hold the record with nine players on an All-Star team.
What? You think they'd take the oppurtunity to add a lefty since Wagner is the only one. Not only do they replace Wood with another righty, but one who has been horrible the past 2 months.

Marmol was chosen because he git the most player votes for a reliever not in the All Star Game.
Same way Holliday got to start.
Same way Wright replaced Soriano.

That's stupid. Who cares if he has the most player votes? He's sucked for the last 2 months and the team only has 1 left handed pitcher. It's not as if Wood was the only Cubs' representative either.

Don't blame me...blame the players :cap:

I agree.
Who cares if he has the most player votes?
It's not anyone's decision but the fans, and although I completely disagree with some of their decisions (the AL team seems very Red Sox friendly) it is, and almost always has been their decision.

Yes, and I would love to have a great lefty reliever to accompany Wagner.

Like I said before, the American League team is quite Red Sox friendly as well. David Ortiz? He's hitting .252/13/48. Not really All-Star caliber numbers in my opinion. Not to mention the fact that he's injured. Same thing for Jason Varitek. .218/7/28. An all-star hitting .218? And Jason Giambi doesn't make all-star team? His numbers are all better than both Ortiz and Varitek. .253/19/55, especially considering how hot he has been. In June and July, he hit a combined .309, had 12 home runs and 33 runs batted in. So, like I said, it seems to very anti-Yankee. There are 15 players from the AL East on the all-star team, and three of them are from the Yankees. Seven of them are from Boston, three are from Tampa Bay, one is from Toronto, and one is from Baltimore. Only Rivera, Jeter, and Rodriguez made the team.
The All-Star game is now more of a popularity contest, rather than putting the best players on the field to play each other in a game that MATTERS. It doesn't matter to anyone anymore. When I was growing up, we had three highlights in the season. We had opening day, the World Series, and the All-Star game. People voted for the best players. Not their favorite players on their favorite teams.

So the players do vote for pitchers? I don't think the fans ever have, so this one can't be pinned on us.
This is a pretty bad choice. At least with Varitek the guy is immensely popular with everyone despite his non-All Star play. How the heck does Marmol get to that point? The hitters have loved hitting him so much the last couple months they decided to reward him?
If Marmol gets in the game and pitches as he has of late, it could hurt his team in the long run (HFA in WS).

The player voting has been done before he started pitching really bad.

well, he pitched effectively there in extras. Much closer to what he was about 5 weeks ago.
and as solrac said, voting was finished up over 2 weeks before the break, his worst performances were during that stretch. Before that, he was inconsistent where he would fall behind guys and then proceed to get out the side before actually getting damaged.

So it wasn't a bad choice by the players, it just might have been a lot different if the voting ended closer to the actual game date. Can't blame them for that.
That sounds like how Danny Graves held onto the Reds closer job for a couple years.

Well, he shut down the AL in his one inning, so does that mean that the crying stops now?
