View Full Version : Publicize our world-class threads?

I don't know if this will go anywhere, but I thought I'd throw this out there anyway.
I saw the thread about the annoying ad, and the need to pay the bills. With that need to bring in money in mind, we now have some marque, world-class attractions here now.
Meet The Sports Writers (http://www.baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?t=57538) is unique. The Sports Writers organization never kept records of their own members. I have long been compiling data on them, and we now have a truly superlative attraction, which should be publicized. This unique thread also has the added bonus of have visuals in the way of photos.
We also have another unique attraction. Member BSmile has created a thread for panoramic baseball photos. Vintage Panoramic Pictures (http://baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?t=75607)
GaryL, bmarlowe and myself have sought to provide many of the names of identification.
These 2 threads are extremely rare and valuable sources of information.
These 2 threads, along with the Historical, Archival Photographs give us incredibly marketable resources. But I realize we cannot publicize the Historical Archival Photos, for copy-write reasons.
But I see no reason that the other 2 couldn't in some way be put out there.
Any feedback, anyone? Sound like a valid, legitimate idea?

How would publicizing them on other sites generate revenue for this site? Unless somebody is willing to donate ad space on their site the cost of advertising should cancel out whatever extra revenue is generated by having more people visit this site (and theoretically click on ads). Unless of course you mean we should spam other sites, which I don't think is a real viable option.
Seconldy both Meet the Sportswriters and the Panoramic Photo threads contain copyrighted material. Virtually every single thread that contains photos that have been taken from newspapers or archives are in violation of copyright law. As of right now I believe anything before 1913 and with corporate authorship is free to use. Also any work by an author who copyrighted his work and then died before 1923 is free to use.

I'm not saying I'm an advertising authority. I am not familiar enough with that area to know how to go about it.
But I was not thinking about advertising on other sites. I was thinking about a blurb on the front page of this site, announcing some of our better products.
I've done a lot of the work. Do I also have to think up the advertising too?
My point is that if the rest of the sport's fans knew what we have, we'd have more traffic. Aside from the advertising challenge, do you actually dispute such an obvious thing? Would seem beyond dispute to me. But I'm biased, having been involved with the creation of these amazing, incredible resources.
And yes, some of the stuff is copy-righted, but an absolutely huge amount of these 3 threads are not. And no one is suggesting we charge for our treasures. Just trying to help Sean from losing money.

Bill it looks like virtually every single photo and news clipping in those threads are in copyright violation. Perhaps you guys got permission, perhaps they copyright holders have waived ownership, perhaps you guys took the photos yourself. I don't know but on first glance they are all copyrighted material.
No it isn't wrong to want to get more notice but considering that this place is pretty darn close to a non revenue generating site and marketing this site would cost money I see little reason to go above and beyond what Sean already does. For instance Sean used to post links to threads on the front page of Baseball Almanac, it appears he no longer does that.
The biggest way to get noticed Sean already does and that is to let his material be available for search engines. Type virtually any baseball related question or search query into a search box and you are bound to get at least one baseball fever hit back on the first page. Example: Type in greatest player baseball in Yahoo search and the number one return is baseball almanac. Type in Ted Williams Shift and the number one hit is from Baseball-Fever.
So really the best way to "market" Fever is to continue to talk about a wide array of baseball topics.

I will add a little blurb on my baseball-reference.com pages I've sponsored, and any other sponsor can do the same :dance

The front page of Baseball Almanac does have a listing of certain threads. Perhaps you could ask Sean to put some of your faves on there, Bill.
Don't forget, though, Bill. One man's treasure . . . Everyone views what they like best as important.

Although they're not clickable links, they are now listed on my pages

I see you've sponsored Buck Ewing. Who else? And might I suggest this guy (http://www.baseball-reference.com/j/jamesje01.shtml)?

That guy s**ks. I got freebie John Kull here, and on basketball I got Paul Arizin and on football I got Anthony Munoz. I think I'm paying a combined 35 bucks for an Ohioan baseball HOFer that many thought was the best until Cobb came along, one of the top HOFers in the NBA, AND who some think rates in the top 10 of all NFL players.
