View Full Version : What I did in 1989

When the quake struck the 1989 WS, I wrote Fay Vincent a certified letter saying that to honor baseball's roots, the series should be continued in Yankee Stadium and Veterans Stadium. And give the entire proceeds to Bay Area Relief. You would have had to pinch Philadelphians, to have seen the A's taking the field in a World Series after all those years!

I know that they wanted to play the game if at all possible in the Bay Area in order to unify the City. But they probably needed to focus their time and money on more pressing concerns than attending a baseball game. Waiting 10 days to resume the Series was ridiculous. And the end result was sort of a fizzle, since an A's sweep probably didnt do much to unify the Bay Area :)

I can't say your idea would have had any appeal to anyone. Least of all the participants. The majority of the players lived in the Bay Area. They had real concerns about their family, friends, and possessions. Why in the world would they want to be involved in relocating the WS 3000 miles away from those issues.

And if they were to move it, LA (Dodgers/Angels) would be more sensible.

To raise money "in the world" to solve some of those issues (as I said above.)

I like your idea, but I do think it wouldn't have worked. Even as that was 20 years ago, the teams were generations removed from New York and Philadelphia by that time, and even if the Philadelphia A's and NY Giants fans would have been beside themselves, the Oakland and SF fans would have been outraged. Especially for the prize of a WS game.

Still, it would be neat if this sort of thing could be done in an interleague game, but the fans of the current cities would still have a hard time with it. Perhaps if Oakland plays the Phillies in an interleague game next year, they will wear the old blue uniform.

i thought about something similar what bryanac625 said above...

for several years since teams are honoring the negro leagues in retro uniform...how about some of the teams honor their respectful cities before them that had a mlb team...?

so when the kansas city royals play the oakland a's the royals could wear the green/gold uniform of the a's or the original red/black of '55 and the oakland team would wear the blue/white of the philadelphia a's...?

just one time when these two teams meet up...?:cap:

I like that idea. Heck, I'd like to see the Tigers dress as the old Wolverines of the NL for a game.
