hey new, welcome to the board.

Thats a very general question for us to answer. what age, what league, what kind of swing do you have(meaning are you using your hips or arms mostly). 5 foot sounds about 12 ish? Most kids are still using -12's and -13's at this age because they usually are arm swingers, if thats you then a 29 or 30 inch bat with a 18 oz would be good to try out, if you use your lower half and can swing a heavier bat I would try a 29/19 or 30/20. My 7yr old swings a 29/19 and he is 58lbs (just to give you an idea of the difference between using hips or arms)

If you have a local batting cage, go and try out some different bats, then you will see what you like.

here's my advice.... take all the money you planned on spending to buy the new composite Stealth Virus Bomber Voodoo.. and find someone to give you batting lessons...

if you need a site online to buy bats at .. check out justbats.com.. try and find a buddy to go in with you as they have GREAT 2 for 1 deals and sometimes 3 for 1 deals on last years models...

I paid $130 for TWO demarini vexxums 29/20.5 -8.5 drop last year, free shipping. .. sold the other one to my sons friend - we each paid $65... not bad.

Unless you experience significant growth and increase in strength why do you need to change bats?

What size bat are you swinging now? At 14 your coming to where your gonna need to goto -3 in a year. Can you swing a -3 bat right now? I would take RodCarew's advise and find an instructor that will teach you how to use your lower half.

good luck

Unless you think you're not going to grow much based on family history, you're at an age where you might have considerable growth between now and next season. And, you don't need a backup bat for games, now, right? (If you have to buy a new bat in a hurry because your current bat breaks, you can get one via mail order in four or five days, so you could get by with a teammate's bat if you have any games in the interim.)

So, I'd wait until then to see where you are. That 2008 bat you'd buy now for $250 bucks but not use much might be available for $180 then. And, of course, you could be pushing 5'6", and that 30/20 bat you're using will be much too small. Then, of course, you can also assess your chances for going out for high school ball, and may want to invest in a -3.

With that said, it sounds like what you'd be ready for now would be something like a 31/21 Easton Stealth with a 2 5/8" diameter barrel. And, of course, listen to what your coach has to say -- he's the one looking at your swing and can see if you're having to alter your mechanics to get a too-heavy bat turned into the strike zone.

I made another post about this, its called 30in voodoo. I am 5'8 130 pounds (14yrs) and I have been using a teammates bat, that is a 30in voodoo also, i am 8-10 with 3 doubles, and a triple with the voodoo. When using my stealth composite which is a 32in bat, i have been hitting well, but i think i'm hitting a little better with the 30in voodoo why?

OC, is that Voodoo a -3 (i.e., 30/27), or something else? With a 30 inch bat, I'd worry about plate coverage. Even with a 32" bat, Ursa Minor seems to be hitting everything off the tip of the bat this year, and he's not pulling off the ball.

no it's a -7.5, but when i went to the store and swung a 30in -3 voodoo it didn't feel that much different (i'm used to my 32/29 stealth comp for school ball). I haven't had any problems with plate coverage, with the voodoo.

Why are you using a -7.5 bat at fourteen years old?
