We see many kids wearing regular batting gloves under their mitts but the Palm Guard brand glove is deffinately the one we see the most at our camps that is designed for this use.

the Louisville Slugger Bionic inner glove is an excellent alternative to the palmgard. I think its a better fit, more comfortable and offers a little better protection than the plamgard.

My son has used PalmGuards for years and is addicted to them. My Neanderthal self says he should suck it up and go with a bare hand to get a better feel, but my son never, ever drops a ball that gets into his glove, whether thrown or hit.
But, when he outgrew his old one he went with the Louisville Slugger bionic because we couldn't find a PalmGuard glove in his size. The LS has padding on the ring finger as well (just a little) and is shaped a bit more for a cupped feel. I think it might be a tad better for catchers than the PalmGuard -- but it's your call. Here's a picture of it:

Batting gloves just aren't designed for that purpose, but they may be okay if a fielder wants just a touch of extra protection. So, if he's got an old batting glove he wants to use, fine. It'll save him the $18 to $20 bucks the PalmGuard or Louisville Slugger cost.

I always used a weight lifters glove. It had extra padding in the palm but because it was fingerless it still allowed a good feel of the glove. It also wasn't as hot as a batting glove.
