If any of you have been to Caesar's Palace in Vegas you will know that Pete Rose is there in a sports store signing autographs all the time. I went in there and told him that I'm always working on my swing and it was pretty funny when I heard the famous 6 words come out of his mouth....

"See the ball hit the ball"

Makes me wonder if all this stuff just came natural to these great ball players. They just took so many swings at a young age and throughout their young baseball career that they just developed their swings on their own. I know Pete isn't going to sit down and talk hitting mechanics with me the entire time I was in there but I still think a lot of these guys it just completley came natural to and they didn't need to do any crazy drills x times a day etc.

No matter how hard I try, I just for the life of me cannot sing. I don't know if I'm tone deaf or just bad. In my head I sound like Sinatra, to my wife I sound like a cat getting a root canal. The bottom line is I am not genetically predisposition to sing. I could get better with lessons and hard work, but the physiological make-up necessary for me to be a great singer just does not exist. The same applies to baseball... Now if we could only get about 1M dads to understand this.

Im sure you and Pete both did - see the ball , hit the ball. Except he has prolly done it a billion times more then you. And thats before he got into college :)

Pete likely also didn't have people giving him bad advice.

LOL! Jake when you coached high school did you ever deal with parents who didn't understand what level college prospect their son could be? I'm dealing with a player and parents on our travel team who think their son is going to play at one of the top ranked programs in the country. I don't think he could get accepted academically, much less for baseball. Maybe when my dog gets a return form letter inviting him to this college's summer camp they will start to get it. When I told a college coach this story he laughed and said, "Coach ***** would be happy to take your dog's money for a summer camp.

Oh well, I've dealt with this coaching travel softball. Now it's time to start going through it with baseball.

Rose played in an era where players went from high school to the minors. There weren't a lot of players going to college before turning pro. Besides, Rose wouldn't be able to spell his college letter.

I now use this... I tell parents, "According to NCAA only 1:13,000 HS ball players make it to the pros. I am not going to discuss with you if your son has what it takes.... all I want you to do is go and physically find the other 12,999 HS players who are not as talented as your son."

A friend of mine stopped to see Pete in Vegas sometime last year. He asked what the secret to hitting was, and Pete said, "Look for the fastball and hit it f...ing hard."

I wonder if a graphic showing the player pool size for each level of baseball would actually get through to some folks...HS players, all college players, D-I players, minor leaguers, major leaguers. Make them concentric circles showing the filtering process going on. The data range might be so large that the impact would be muted, though.

I'm not sure about Rose's spelling ability, but I'd imagine that he can spell "Pete Rose" pretty well...he must have written it 100,000,000 times by now on every piece of memorabilia imaginable.
