Alright, I know this is a bit of a risk, putting myself out there like this, but there are a lot of peole whose opinion I respect on this board. A nearby D2 university is looking for a head softball coach. This is a position at this particular school that I am extremely interested in. I've applied for a number of head softball positions over the last couple of years with only 1 interview opportunity. Prior to getting into softball, I also applied for a number of D3 baseball jobs, getting just a couple of interviews.

I know a lot of it has to do with knowing the right people and right place, right time stuff. I also know I have 2 strikes against me for a softball position because I am not a female, and none of my college coaching experience is in softball. I just see so many young, inexperienced coaches getting college jobs and running the programs into the ground.

I have a lot of information put together in my coaching portfolio that I have prepared to show how I would build a championship program. I think I interview well, it's just a mater of actually getting an interview. I'm looking for any suggestions on improving my resume and/or cover letter to improve my chances--things to change, add, delete. Negative or positive suggestions are both welcome as long as it is constructive criticism. Here's the link to my resume:

IMO your resume is strong.

If you dont get to interview for the position make a strong push to coach in a collegiate summer league, or with a JC. Having more experience with college aged athletes may be beneficial.

good luck

Thanks Deemax. If I don't get this job, I am planning on helping out with a local D3 college softball team that has made numerous trips to the World Series. I figure this would look good on the resume, and maybe I could even take over at some point. But this is all dependent upon being able to get out of my H.S. athletic director's job and finding something to cover the lost wages if I can't just teach the entire day.....

Bill, if helpful I would be happy to pen a letter of recommendation under our Legion Baseball letter head using your helpfulness at BBF as its content. I think the resume looks good.

Something to consider, I would think that they would be interested in knowing how well you did at the HS level. If you had a strong program and won District ect...Just something to think about.

Thanks Joe, I may take you up on that--I'll PM you.

One of my former softball players that has signed to play in college next year offered to write a letter of recommendation as well. Do you think this would be a good idea?

Cally, check out the end of the link--I had a page that listed some of the program accomplishments. Is that what you meant?
