I use QuickTime Pro, from Apple, for $30. It allows you to convert between many popular formats. MP4 will be much smaller than WMP.

I haven't used Quicktime, but I've tried a bunch for PC's. Stay away from anything by Roxio -- it's been nothing but trouble. Pinnacle is really clunky.
My choice is Sony's Vegas Movie Studio. It's all drag-and-drop, and it's very intuitive to do a whole bunch of editing and add titles and effects. You should be able to find it for $60 - $80 bucks.

Here's some ratings on some video editing software. Each has multiple formats that can be output.

I use adobe premiere elements.
FYI,
editing, is trimming off some of the video before and after what you want to show.
compressing, is converting the original video captured by the camera, to a compressed format for uploading to the web.
