Hi guys,
First off - I did some searching here and on google and either didn't search the right key words or just couldn't find the answers, so I'm asking now...
So I need some help. I am not very savvy in the video department and want to take some video of my son's swing from my camcorder to my PC to this site. I have no idea how to do this.
Here is a list of things I need to do and need suggestions on how to do it:
1) I have video of my son's swing and need to upload it to my PC. What is the best way to do this?
2) There is about 3 minutes worth of recording but only need to post 10-15 seconds. Once I get it on my PC how do I edit it? Do I need special software? Any good software for Windows XP?
3) Once I get it edited, what is the best way to post it? I have seen some suggest YouTube or Flikr, I think. Are there better places?
Sorry for the dumb questions, but I've never really needed to get videos on my PC or upload them to sites before, so I never learned how.
Thanks for any help you can give!

do you have the connector to connect your cam to computer? If you do that windows should promt you from there. There are lots of software programs from there to help you, I use JC video, but windows has built in Movie Maker. You just connect your computer to video, open movie maker and you should be able to figure it out from there. Movie maker has a help window as well.

Over the weekend I bought a firewire to connect the cam to the PC. I'll try your suggestion and see if it works!

Well the $25 web site at hittingillustrated.com is a great deal and well worth it, as I can share clips with any kid I am working with.
Before I get into this, I am throwing out some ideas, and their are many ways to skin the cat but this stuff is not easy. If you don't live in software, it gets kind of tricky. I can't possibly be your tech support, but I can throw out some ideas, and maybe others can.
Do you have a mini-dv type camera? I highly recommend any Canon Digital Camera product that is capable of producing 60 FPS, and dumping it as an AVI file on an SD card. In any case most likely you have a video camera, and what you need to do is capture the file in Windows using either firewire, USB (if you have mini-dv) or if you have a standard VHS I think you need a special adapter which you can easily find at Fry's. Can't help you much there.
Once you figure out how to connect to the computer there are various tools you can use to actually capture a clip.
One of the easiest is V1 Home, (If using my camcorder I prefer because it saves AVI files). You should have Windows Movie Maker, although you must be careful not to save as WMV or you'll have more conversions.
To make a clip it should be no more than 2 seconds usually less and this will encompass load, swing follow through.
I use a ton of applications for various reasons:
VirtualDubMod - To edit AVI or MPG files to grab individual clips (might work on wmv as well?)
Animation Shop - Here I take an AVI clip and make a gif of it. I also trim it down and crop it, so that people don't have to download 4 MB clips like they do with O'Leary's kid. Great for side by sides as well. I usually further crop the clip to remove all the useless junk in the background, and can get my clips smaller this way.
Quicktime - Analysis
Windows Movie Maker - sometimes use to grab video if I didn't use the Canon.
V1 Home Sports - for me easier than windows movie maker, your mileage may vary
eRightsoft SuperConverter - Used if someone sends me wmv to convert to mpg or whatever I decide to convert to (will convert anything)
Most of that is free except Animation Shop. But there are many other tools out there that will do all of this for you. Some get into deinterlacing clips and other more technical issues.

I've provided a link below to a site that might help you. Also, you can google the words, - digital video capture - (include all 3 words in the search box)
also google, placing these 3 words in the search box - web video upload
Basically,
1 you take video with a digital video camera,
2. capture it from the camera to your computer -
to do this you need a firewire card and cable, and software that can capture the video from your camera, to your computer.
3. Edit the video-
this is done with software
4. Output the video to a compressed format -
the software will give you options
5. Upload the video to a website using FTP -
if you don't have a website, you can upload to YouTube or some other free services

If you'd like to bypass much of the software techy stuff, you may want to look into Flip Video Camcorder. I've attached a link for one at Amazon. If you're intent is to take video, upload, and send, don't think you'll find anything easier.
It's not hi resolution, but for internet editing and viewing it will work great!

For $70 or $80 more he could buy certain Canon Digital Camera's which output M-JPEG AVI files right to an SD Card. I have a 2GB card I picked up for $13, and can take both 30 FPS and 60 FPS clips.
By the way you still need to edit the clips. Too many guys have 10 second clips for one swing because they don't know how to chop down the video to something respectable.
