1 IP, 11 hits, 10 ER, 1K, 3 HR... Ouch!

I guess it's safe to say that it wasn't his best performance!

I got a text from a friend that is a Reds fan that said "Arroyo is superawesome!"

I guess there was just a hint of sarcasm in it.

Yea, that was historic. No pitcher has done that in baseball since 1900.

If you are going to give him credit for the one K, dont forget he was able to walk a batter as well. I was kind of suprised to hear that no other pitcher since the dawn of the modern era had given up 10 runs in one inning or less of work, but then i figured if you are in there long enough to give up 10 runs, usually, you can record 4 outs as well, by default.

On July 29, 2007, Jason Jennings yielded 11 earned runs in 2/3rds of inning against the Padres. To get ESPN's "worst since 1900" you have to qualify it the way they did. They said 1IP, at least 10 earned runs and at least 11 hits.

Jennings effort was worse than Arroyo's. He was actually the pitcher who was on the mound when all 11 runs scored. Arroyo was "only" out there for 9 of the runs. Jennings didn't see the end of the first inning while Arroyo faced five batters in the 2nd.

Ahhh, thats for the clarification.....so the stat is misleading.... no wonder i was suprised... but Arroyo still basically was throwing BP.... wait, sometimes in BP they foul balls off or hit grounders....

Didn't Paul Wilson give up 10 runs in the first to the Dodgers a while back. I remember he had a really bad start without getting an out.

8 ER over 0 IP.

Sheesh, yeah, Dusty stuck with Arroyo long after any rational man would have pulled him.

That said, Daisuke Matsuzaka did something very similar just his last time out -- only 8 ER, though, and 3 of them were inherited runners (reliever Chris Smith gave up a salami)

ESPN is just a pain when they make these kinds of claims. And half the time they don't even get all the qualifiers stated.

Maybe Dusty wanted to save his bullpen. Could have been disasterous if Arroyo was taken out in the first and then yesterday's game goes longer than 10.

True, but was it his worst?
That's the scarier question.
