Brandon Webb is underpaid, strong, 11-2, and one of the best. Yet he has a contract that earns him 10mil. less than Randy Johnson. Why pay so much for a guy who's motor is burning down, and Webb earning so little for so much he helps the team in. What do you think?:cap::hp

The question is, can they afford to resign him, or will a team like New York or Boston buy him?

This is the way the salary structure in baseball works..... players come up and earn the league minimum or close to it, until they hit arbitration, which in recent years has yielded huge jumps. I think this past year Ryan Howard went from a couple hundred thousand to 10 million a year. Or until the team signs the player to a long term deal. These long term deals, rarely work out perfectly for the team, but small market clubs are forced to do it or risk losing the player to free agency because they cannot bid with the large market teams. The downfall of this approach, is that the player can fall into a sophmore slump, or become a one hit wonder type of player, or become beset with injuries and then the dollars owed to that player become a black hole and hamstring a small market club for years to come. Right now, based on his performance, Webb is underpaid, however, when he hits free agency, he will command a ridiculous salary. Even if he keeps up his production there will be some point in his career, as in Johnson's case now, where he will be considered overpaid. Veteran players make more money.
