Meyers was Ryan's last stikeout victim, but the Angels were not his last opponent.
On September 22, 1993, Ryan faced the Seattle Mariners at the Kingdome – and did not retire any of the six batters he faced. Ryan gave up a leadoff single to Omar Vizquel and then walked the next three batters before Dann Howitt touched him for a grand slam. With a 3-1 count on the next batter, Dave Magadan, Ryan tore ligaments in his pitching elbow and was forced to leave the game. Howitt’s homer was the 10th grand slam hit off Ryan in his long career, breaking the record for the most career grand slams allowed by a pitcher. The blast was also the only grand slam of Howitt’s career – he would finish his career in 1994 with just five homers and 22 RBIs.
