The Mets have had some of the baseball's greatest players on their roster through the years. Unfortunately, most of these guys made their reputations with other teams. I thought it would be fun to field an all-time Mets team of these guys. If only they spent their glory days in the orange & blue ! I'm leaving off players developed by the Mets who became great after they were traded. That's for another thread !

Starters:
C: Yogi Berra
1B: Gil Hodges
2B: Jeff Kent
3B: Joe Torre
SS: Gary Templeton
LF: George Foster
CF: Willie Mays
RF: Tommy Davis

SP:
Warren Spahn
Johan Santana
Pedro Martinez
Tom Glavine
Frank Viola

Closer:
Clem Labine

Pen:
Dick Tidrow -R
Danny Graves -R
Billy Taylor -R
Cal Koonce -R
Mel Rojas -R
Graeme Lloyd -L

Went with 7 guys in the pen because it's week, is all righty & outside of Spahn & Viola the starters were never known for going 9.
Some of the position players were harder to decide than I thought they would be.
Even with the week pen, this is a really dominating team offensively and the SP is unbelievable, (in their prime, of course !).

A few other Hall of Famers to throw into the mix might be: Rickey Henderson, Richie Ashburn, Duke Snider, and Eddie Murray.

Frank Tanana and Mo Vaughn also come to mind.

Definitely, but if Mo Vaughn has a roster spot, then I'd also have to argue for Delgado and Green.

Picking Mays over Henderson was a hard choice, one I really went back & forth on. I took Mays on the equivilent of a coin flip. Ashburn & Snider are second tier HOF's after those two.

I forgot about Murray. He's probably a better choice for 1st. I'm sure ther are some other guys I forgot about too.

I would have thrown Kent in the other thread, players who were developed by the Mets and becamse great after they wree traded. I know he didn't come up through the Mets farm system, but every other player on your list was great before the Mets, and he doesn't fit that bill.

I'd proposed replacing him with Alomar.

You know, 2B was the second hardest to decide on after CF. Kent definitly sticks out because he, miraculously,(but that's a different subject), became a top 5 all-time second baseman because of his unexpected, unbelievable, (again, a whole other thread), slugging prowess after they traded him. As you said, everybody eles was good before they got here.

The thing is, you can hardly call him home grown since he made it to the majors with Toronto & the Mets had a pretty good idea of who they were getting.

I didn't like either player, so I tried to be objective: who had the better career stats ? whose stats are more suspect ? who was a bigger jerk ? Kent, while a mediocre Met, played hard when he was here, so I gave the spot to him. More subjective than objective, but what are you gonna do ?

However, I'll add this caveat: Kent's transformation after leaving the Mets is one of the steroid era's most eye popping events. Despite my feelings for Alomar, he almost got the spot. I really had to hold my nose for this pick !

Mike Marshall the pitcher and even Julio Franco might fit the scope of this thread.

Definitly they fit. I never thought of either one. Mike Marshall would definitly be my closer. Now I can get Rojas off.
Franco vs Templeton, that's one that needs some thought.
