Keith Hernandez ripped his former Mets teammate, Gary Carter, during yesterday's game on Ch. 11, calling him "unconscious" after Carter openly campaigned for the managerial job currently occupied by Willie Randolph.

"I have great respect for Gary as a player," said Hernandez, now a TV analyst. "He's a Hall of Famer. When Johnny Bench left the game, he was the premier catcher in the National League.

"But that being said, and I've kept quiet for such a long time, but for the people out there listening, just go in the dictionary and look up 'unconscious' and you'll find a picture of Gary Carter.

Wow. Well, I do agree that Carter was out of line, but I would never have guess that Keith would go public with a comment like that...

I was so sure that Keith Hernandez was just being facetious. But, it turns out that it's true.

You always had a suspicion that these two did not really like each other during the 80's, now we know it's true.

When Carter came to the Mets before the 1985 season, I remembered reading that a lot of his Expos teammates didn't really care for him... In fact, I read somewhere that they derisively called him "Gary CAMERA" since he seemed to always want to be seen and heard.

The guy was the very embodiment of grit, guts, enthusiasim and winning. They were fools to trade him in his prime and New York was thrilled with their foolishness. What did his teamates ever win ? They were jelous, envious losers.
The guy got carried away on the air and made a fool of himself almost 2 decades after he retired. Big deal. He was one of the greatest ball players to ever call New York home. That says it all.

Let's not get carried away. He's not even the best player or catcher the Mets have ever had.

I saw it on air, it may have been uncalled for, but I agree with Hernandez. Carter shouldn't have said that.

Is this sarcasm?

What did his teammates win? Exactly what he did, since they were teammates.

No, no sarcasm. The teamates I refered to were his Expo's teamates. I stand by what I said. He was on a team full of jeleous, envious losers who bad mouthed him like crazy when he was traded. I remember it well.

When he came to New York he was mearly one of many hungry, limelight-loving, hot shots who walked the walk and talked the talk. The result was the biggest baddest champions NY ever saw. Met fans loved him. He remains the greatest catcher they ever had.

He made a stupid, classless mistake last week. That doesn't take away from what he was as a player. Lots of agressive, hard nosed ball players are jerks and make mistakes. We love Kieth, but he made a few whoper mistakes too.

Carter was and still is a desperate, pathetic egomaniac.

The greatest catcher [receiver] the Mets ever had was Jerry Grote. Best hitting catcher was Mike Piazza. Best all around catcher? Gary Carter.

while piazza was a far better hitter, carter was better defensively, and i believe that carter was the one i would rather have at bat in a clutch situation.

Sorry, but Keith has every right to rip Gary for his comments and he's correct in his crticisms of Carter.. The Hall of Fame has nothing to do with it.

Actually, the nick name was 'Lights,' as in 'Camera Lights.' Sure the Expos were loaded with egomaniacs in those days, but Gary outshone them all.
