For the first time since Bo Jackson and Nolan Ryan graced Anaheim Stadium, the All-Star game is returning to Southern California.
The Angels have been awarded the 2010 All-Star game, with Commissioner Bud Selig scheduled to make the official announcement Wednesday at Angel Stadium, according to three sources not authorized to speak publicly in advance of the announcement.
The game is scheduled for Tuesday, July 13, with a fan festival at the Anaheim Convention Center extending from the previous weekend through game day.
The Angels and the city of Anaheim worked together to secure the All-Star game, even as the two sides prepared for another round in court.
Club executives and city leaders are scheduled to share the stage with Selig at Wednesday's news conference. On June 20, the team and the city will face off in the state appellate court, in Anaheim's latest and perhaps last challenge to the Angels' 2005 name change.
The Dodgers are expected to be awarded the finals of next year's World Baseball Classic, but Selig does not plan to make any announcement about the WBC while he is in town, according to the sources.
Dodger Stadium has not played host to the All-Star game since 1980, the only time it has been held there. The Dodgers have expressed interest in bringing the game back to Los Angeles, with 2013 a possible target. The Dodgers plan extensive renovations of the ballpark and surrounding area in advance of the 50th anniversary of Dodger Stadium, in 2012.
The All-Star game was last played in Southern California in 1989, before a crowd of 64,036 at Anaheim Stadium.
The crowd remains the fourth-largest in All-Star game history, behind the three games played at Cleveland Municipal Stadium, which no longer exists. The Angels renovatedand downsized their stadium after the NFL's Rams left for St. Louis, with seating capacity now listed at 45,257.
Jackson, a two-sport star who took a winter job as a running back for the Los Angeles Raiders, was the most valuable player of the 1989 game with a 448-foot home run. Ryan was the winning pitcher, 10 years after Angels General Manager Buzzie Bavasi chased him out of Anaheim and into free agency with the parting shot that he could replace Ryan with "two 8-7 pitchers."
The American League won, 5-3, tagging the loss on John Smoltz, the only player who appeared in that game that remains active. Angels Manager Mike Scioscia was the backup catcher for the National League.
Anaheim Stadium also played host to the All-Star game in 1967. The National League won, 2-1, in 15 innings -- the most innings in All-Star history -- with Tony Perez hitting the game-winning home run off Catfish Hunter.
Dodgers Manager Joe Torre was the starting catcher for the National League. On that day, his teammates included Hall of Fame pitchers Juan Marichal, Ferguson Jenkins, Bob Gibson, Don Drysdale and Tom Seaver.

Despite what the story says, the last All Star game in So Cal was in San Diego sometime around 1992 or 93.

Notice he didn't say in Los Angeles.
Strange, this will be Anaheim's 3rd all star game, yet Dodger Stadium has only hosted 1 in its 50 years, with nothing on the horizon for another 5 years at least.

Thats also interersting considering that the Dodgers are one of the leagues more premier and recognized franchises, as well as having an old but vey well maintained and recently updated Dodger Stadium.

Why does it seem like certain teams get the All Star game more than others? I'm sure the Red Sox, Yankees, and Cardinals have had their fair share. So why not teams like Kansas City, Mets, Dodgers... etc?

Yea I don't know. Obviously they league wants to get to all the "new" stadiums that hurts for instance the Mets or Royals chances on scoring the game, also Shea is looked almost as an eyesore by baseball. I was actually shocked myself when in 1996 the old and pretty antiquated Vet in Philly got the all star game, and with that they will most likely have to wait to get one in Citizens bank.
Its going to be nuts trying to get all the venues in. You have the Nats new Park, Citi Field, Minnesota coming in 2010. And I'm sure MLB would love to get an All Star in the new Yankee Stadium despite the fact that its hosting one this year. Should be interesting.

So why not teams like Kansas City, Mets, Dodgers... etc?I think you have to bid on it, like the Super Bowl. Some teams want it more than others. I think some teams are not interested. It may not be worth the hassle. Actually there has only been 1 AS Game at Fenway, and one at Yankee in over forty years. There was only one at the old Busch Stadium sometime in the late 60s.
Oftentimes a new stadium, or anniversary is chosen as the site. Maybe it will be at Dodger Stadium for the 50th anniversary. The Mets will most likely want one when the new park opens. KC might want one when their renovations are complete.

2012, which will be Dodger Stadium's 50th anniversary, was already promised to Kansas City if their renovations are done by then.

Teams can only bid for it every other year. One years it's National League Park, the next year is American League Park.
Pittsburgh Pirates has hosted it 5 times
Cleveland Indians have hosted it 5 times
NY Yankees have hosted it 4 times* (4th one is 2008)
Chicago White Soxs have hosted it 4 times
Washington DC (the city) has hosted it 4 times
Cincinnati has hosted it 4 times.
St Louis has hosted it 4 times.
Detroit has hosted it 4 times.
Philadelphia has hosted it 4 times.
Boston has hosted it 4 times. (3 soxs, 1 brave)
Chicago Cubs have hosted it 3 times.
Milwaukee have hosted it 3 times.
San Fransisco has hosted it 3 times.
Houston has hosted it 3 times.
Baltimore, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Anaheim, San Diego, Seattle have hosted it 2 times each, as well as the Polo Grounds twice.
Montreal, Oakland ('87), Toronto ('91), Arlington ('95), Denver ('98), and Shea ('64) has hosted it only 1 time, as well as Ebbets Field only once.
It's a no brainer to me of who is due to host it.

How about the DBacks. They've had a stadium 11 seasons and aren't even up for consideration.

i forgot about them. They are more due then any other team.
It's not just about the park - the city has to have sufficient convention space to host the FanFest and whatnot. Cincinnati Reds officials have publicly stated that they will not get another shot at the game until the city builds a new convention center.

For one, the Dodgers haven't bid for it, or the City of Los Angeles...which ever it is. Im sure Frankie will be bidding once Dodger Stadiums upgardes are finished. Which should be the next 10 years. From what I understand on the Dodgers website, the environmental impact study hasn't been finished yet. So it may be a while when Dodger Stadium holds an All-Star Game. You do have to hand it to Arte! He is marketing the Angels ball club like a world class team that it is!

But doesn't preclude them from giving the game to them the year after, which by luck happens to be the year that the National League gets the game.
2011 is up in the air now, being a National League year anyone else think that it's a no brainer that they put it in Washington? They have a new park, the city needs the good PR, and they haven't had an all star game in 49 years at that time...

Lets see tampa is playing in a dome, the dome is 20 years old even though they have only played in it for 10 years, and our new outdoor stadium is "suppossed" to be done in 2012. Man it would be nice to have an allstar game! The problem is so many other teams will have had their new stadiums without an allstar game before tampa, so we are screwed again for a while i guess.

The Angels will be hosting their third all star game in the same ballpark. This will be the third configuration of Angels/Anaheim Stadium
1. 1967 ASG Anaheim Stadium was just a year old and not enclosed
2. 1989 ASG Anaheim Stadium was enclosed for the Rams since 1980
3. 2010 ASG Angel Stadium open air stadium since 1996.

Thats a pretty cool fact. Its like my dad always says liars figure and figures lie. Althought they did have 3 times in the same stadium, it was 3 different configurations. So all these teams who say they need new stadiums to host all star games aren't right.
