The other day, Ichiro Suzuki became the all-time steals leader for the Seattle Mariners. He also leads MLB in steals this year with 20 already.

What do you think is the highest benchmark Ichiro will surpass in career MLB steals?

(Edit: As of today, May 21, 2008, he has 293 stolen bases in his MLB career.)

Just some facts to consider.
He is 35 with 7 full seasons played and he has 292 SB.

His rate stats are good, but he is getting to the age where 99% of MLB'ers loose their speed. I predict 350ish total at best.

I think he will reach 500. Of course he will start to lose speed in the next few years, but he keeps himself in great shape and is a tremendous athlete. I am sure he will still be playing when he is 40.

Saying he will get 350 is not giving him any type of credit. He might get that by the end of this season.

He would really only need to average 38 a year for the next 6 years to get 500, and he is on pace to steal 75 this year. And I am pretty sure that he will be able to steal 30 a year after that.

Actually, Ichiro is 34.

Your right, i misread it as him having 192 SB's. So up my prediction by 100. 450 total is my proper guess.:laugh

Oh, in that case maybe a moderator can take one vote from the 350 column and shift it to 450?

Ichiro on pace to break steals mark
Mariners outfielder has 24 thefts in 26 tries this season (http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080603&content_id=2831385&vkey=news_sea&fext=.jsp&c_id=sea)

SEATTLE -- One thing that has gone exactly as planned for the Mariners this season is the way Ichiro Suzuki has been stealing bases.

Manager John McLaren said during the offseason that Ichiro could steal 80 bases. That would be 24 more than his single-season high of 56 in 2001, his first season with the Mariners.

"I'm not sure where I came up with 80," McLaren said.

Going into Tuesday night's game against the Angels at Safeco Field, Ichiro had 24 stolen bases in 26 attempts, a pace that would result in 67 thefts and break the franchise's single-season record of 60, set by Harold Reynolds in 1987.

"He's done a real nice job of stealing some bags in big parts of games," McLaren said, "a real nice job."

A lot depends on how much Ichiro decides to run since he has always had the green light with a average of 41 SB's a year. If he can steal 80 a year like McLaren says he has been dogging it since 2001.

Around 150 more SB's I would say.

He will get around 500, and stop, in my opinion.

A more interesting question to me would be how many "CAREER" steals would Ichiro end up with had he started his in the major leagues.........

Congrats to the guys guessing 700. You're saying he'll play ten more years (until age 44-45) and his yearly SB production (and playing time) will NEVER drop one bit :crazy

^^^^Im certain your the same baseball mind who predicted before Ichiro came to the major leagues that he would have the most intentional walks in the league over a 7 year period ass well as the best average with 2 outs and runners in scorring position and overall numbers with runners in scorring position.........:yawn:

Just that it supports my long held suspicion that Ichiro is not human and in fact some sort of Japanese robot. Therefore will not decline and continue playing until he reaches 700. How else does it make sense for A leadoff hitter who steals to lead the league in IBB's. BTW I didn't vote for 700 I choose 500 i think, but I'm assuming those who did are including his Japan stats in the question pertaining to his "career".

I know this is off topic (sorry) but if you count Suzuki's time with the Orix Blue Wave and the Seattle Mariners he has 2,946 base hits and 497 stolen bases.

He's 34 years old! Had he been born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania instead of Kasugai, Japan he'd be in line to surpass Ty Cobb and Pete Rose Sr.

Suzuki has seven consecutive 200+ hit seasons and he's on pace for an eighth.

I just think, whatever his MLB numbers end up being, we should all be very thankful for even seeing him play. He's one of the all-time greats.

Only 3 out of his last 4 years????? Can't you do any better like actually responding to points I have made, instead of bringing up any posible negative point on Ichiro you possibly can.................Obviosly the robot comment was meant as a joke.....

UHHHHHHH. I think one may have been responding to you saying the choice of 700 was crazy and chastizing those voters when I clearly made the point they may have interpreted "CAREER" steals as including his whole "CAREER" proffesional baseball statistics........

I agree 700 is crazy. If they're truly including Japanese stats they may want to include how many SB he got there
