Cincinnati Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez will be attempting to go 9 straight games without giving up more than 1 earned run to begin a season. Mike Norris, Oakland, 1980; Dana Fillingim, Boston Braves, 1918; Dutch Leonard, Boston Red Sox, 1914; have all gone 8 games and currently share the record with Volquez.

Also, Edinson Volquez will face Cliff Lee today marking the 3rd time in MLB history that the ERA leaders of both leagues face each other during the regular season. Previous times include Hideki Irabu vs. Al Leiter in 1998 and Tom Glavine vs. Derek Lowe in 2002.

Although if he does it it will be a very impressive achievement, he's only averaging 6 innings per game. You would think if he is doing so well that he would be left in longer than that? Damn pitch count watching.

Volquez gave up 2 ER but did take the lead in ERA with a 1.33 as Lee's rose to 1.37 after getting hit like a drum.

Isn't it a little silly to use the phrase "in MLB history" to describe something which has only been possible since 1997?
