Shame the Indians lost. And Cliff Lee's ERA is now 0.67. Unreal.

It takes some SERIOUS luck to be in the position to pull of an unassisted triple play.

Did Cabrera even need to tag Scutaro to get the final out, or was Scutaro already out because he had already rounded second when Cabrera touched the base to get Mench out? Can someone clarify the rules?

Good question. Although I'm fairly positive that he wouldn't automatically be out. Cabrera would have to tag him or throw back to first. There are only a handful of instances where a baserunner is automatically out, and that isn't one of them.

Scutaro was on first to begin the play. Since the batted ball was caught on the fly, the runners weren't pushed off their bases by the batter becoming a runner. Cabrera stepping on second didn't put out Scutaro, because second wasn't Scutaro's base.

Even more rare than the UTP, it was the 3rd time that the defensive side of the UTP lost.

True, although he did never make a major league appearance. He did have one unremarkable season for the Indianapolis Indians though (Before they became an affiliate of the Pirates).

There have been 14 UTP's in ML history and three of them have been turned by the Tribe.

Buck Showalter (sp?) on All Night on ESPN Radio told a story of a triple play where no fielder touched the ball. He claimed he witnessed this during his first coaching job in the minor leagues, and was 3rd base coach at the time.

Runners on 1st and 2nd, no outs (obviously). Both runners attempt a double steal, and the hitter pops one up on the infield (Infield fly, batter is out). The lead runner freezes, knowing the ball was popped up, and the trailing runner passes him (out number two). The ball comes down and hits the lead runner "in the melon" for out number three.
