*claps* I would expect nothing less from one of the greatest pitchers in the history of this game.
Congratulations, Greg. You've earned it. :dance

I remember his Dodger debut a couple years ago. Six no-hit innings before the rain delay
:clapping Good job Greg

Congratulations to the magnificent doofus :highfive:
Here's hoping that he passes Clemens, and maybe even flags down Warren. He's the only guy I would be happy to see do it.
And here's to him maybe, finally, getting some of the huge regard that he earned long ago.

Why did they take him out in the 6th with only 68 pitches? Unless those 3 hits were in a row in the 6th.

Maddux can't pitch as many innings as he used to (age 42), and the Padres had 3 of their best relievers ready to pitch.
It was catcher Luke Carlin's ML debut, too.

Maddux is already miles past Clemens in CLASS.

And a more 5-tool pitcher than Clemens as well.

5-tool pitcher!? I've sadly never heard of this before ... what exactly are the tools?
Command? Power? Fielding? Stamina?

I've never heard of a 5-tool pitcher, either. My guess would be:
-Power fastball (equivalent to power for a hitter)
-Control (equivalent to a great contact hitter)
-Has 4 great pitches
-Fielding
-Workhorse

To put this into perspective, consider the chronology of the last occurrences of a pitcher obtaining 350 wins.
Yes, there was Clemens (unfortunately).
You have to go all the way back to 1963 when Spahn won his 350th game, shutting out the Chicago Cubs on the final day of the season.
And before that, all the way back to April 17th, 1927, when Pete Alexander beat the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 to win #350.
So that's only three times in the last 81 years that a player has won this many games. And we know Clemens was using steroids for a significant portion of his career, and wouldn't have had a prayer at 350 without them.
Damned impressive. Congrats to one of the top few greatest to ever pitch.
In my mind, perhaps the greatest of them all.

Yeah something like that, but mainly Maddux has great fielding, and known for his great control, and his ability to take the hitters out.

You could even take out "has 4 great pitchers" and add some batting skills instead, a good hitting pitcher is never bad for a team.

Maddux is certainly having a very respectable decline phase. If he had a team with any kind of offense he would have a chance at passing Spahn and reaching 5th place in all-time wins.

Maddux is a true pitcher who has been able to get it done for a long long time. We really have to appreciate this milestone because this is a statistic that we may never see reached again.

If the Cy Young Award's name will be changed, it be changed to the Walter Johnson Award.

Shocking that he actually made an error in this game, very un-Maddux.
What an effort though.

I don't know about all of the Maddux > Clemens talk. I've always been a bigger Maddux fan than I was of Clemens but I pretty much recognize that Clemens is better than Maddux. Not even sure what the heck a "five tool pitcher" is, heh. Anyway, a great accomplishment indeed.

i would not wager on that.

Depends on who renames it. Give the public the vote and it'll be the Nolan Ryan Award. :laugh

Hats off to Maddux. He pitched as great a game as Biggio had hitting against the Rockies when he got hit #3000 and #3001 and #3002 and #3003

We never have before. I think around 2016-20 we'll see the next 300 game winner. Someone in the Oswalt, Hudson, Zambrano, Sabathia, Buhrle, Peavy, Webb, etc. generation when they are reaching age 40.

I read a 1991 pre-All Star game interview in which Rickey Henderson said of the NL's starting pitcher, "Who is Tom Glavine?" Funny stuff!

Remember, when Spahn won his 300th game in 1961, it was the first time since Lefty Grove did it in 1941. I doubt there will be twenty years between Glavine and the next guy to win 300.

As of today, Randy Johnson is 14 shy, and if he wins today, make it 13, and Mike Mussina has a outside shot with 45 away. After that, not much for the next 12-15 years or so for the 300-win mark, but for the 350-win mark, not much for the rest 30-40 years IMO.
