The San Diego Padres released Jim Edmonds. Do you think any team will pick him up. If so -which one. He was a great player in his prime - I hope he gets picked up.

Maybe the Cubs or Tigers.

I think he's done, unfortunately. Ballplayers as talented as Edmonds should not go out like this.... but if this is indeed the end of the road.....farewell Jimmy, you've had a great career.
I was at the World Series with my dad, my son, and my aunt, and we sat in the bleachers, just like we did for the 82, 85, and 87 series, (and just like my father did for all those, plus 64, 67, and 68 incidentally).
Edmonds, amidst the World Series pressure, would still look up into the bleachers and acknowledge the kids who were shouting out his name during warmup throws between innings.
Classy act, Jim Edmonds. He'll always have a special place in Cardinal fans' hearts, especially the Bleacherites. Great defense, great attitude, and a certain walk-off HR in extra innings in the NLCS in 2006, without which the Cardinals might have not even made it to the World Series.

The mentioned/shown homerun was in the 2004 NLCS, not the 2006 NLCS.

He's done. If Kenny Lofton is out of a job, Edmonds has no chance.
This seems to be the year of releasing accomplished veterans. First Thomas, now Edmonds. I think/hope Carlos Delgado is next in-line.

One big difference may be the amount of money each player was earning. How much is Delgado making this year? I know that Edmonds and Lofton are pretty cheap.

Bye Bye Edmonds, you've robbed too many Reds of homeruns.

He's making $16M. He has a $4M buyout next year. Marlins are paying $4M of his contract. The problems with him are not only his awful hitting (can't get around anything over 90 mph) and horrible defense. His attitude was an issue last year and has worn out his welcome.

Of course, 2004... thanks for that. Rolen hit a late HR off Clemens the next night. I had tickets to Game 5 of that Series, there was no game 5 of course. I was at Game 4 and 5 in 2006, I am therefore excused of any errors I make regarding 04 vs 06! :)

I think we had to see this coming. He was on his way out the door last year. I never did understand why the Pads were willing to unload $16 million on hopes and dreams.
He was somethin' else when he was at the top of his game, though. Wow...

He was somethin' else when he was at the top of his game, though. Wow...His numbers have been dropping for several years now. The Padres however, saw Edmonds as a bargain at $6million. This was a cost cutting move, by not signing Cameron for $8million, and not signing Fukudome.

Thanks, parlo -- that fills in the gaps in my head. Not an easy thing to do! :disbelief:
I had totally spaced out Cameron's departure. And I tend to pay attention to the Padres since we've got their AA team here in San Antonio. Ah, some days the synapses are just too far apart. :D

The Cubs are about to sign Jim Edmonds. Good for the Cubs. Good for Jim. Bad for the reat of the NL Central. IMO Edmonds can still play the game.

CHICAGO (TICKER) —The Chicago Cubs on Wednesday signed veteran outfielder Jim Edmonds to a contract for the rest of 2008.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the pro-rated share of the major league minimum salary for the remainder of the year is $289,000.
Following Wednesday’s game against the San Diego Padres, the Cubs optioned center fielder Felix Pie to Class AAA Iowa to make room for the 37-year-old Edmonds on the roster.
Chicago is taking a chance on Edmonds, who was waived by the Padres on Friday, even though his skills have greatly diminished. He will be in uniform for Thursday’s game against his former teammates.
Edmonds batted just .178 in 26 games with the Padres and had more strikeouts (24) than hits (16) in 90 at-bats.
Health also could be a concern as Edmonds, once one of game’s top outfielders who strained his calf and missed six weeks before making his debut with the Padres six games into the season.
Edmonds is a four-time All-Star and eight-time Gold Glove Award winner during his 16 major league seasons with the Los Angeles Angels (1993-99), St. Louis Cardinals (2000-07) and Padres (2008). He has appeared in the postseason six times, advancing to the World Series in 2004 and 2006.

while i dont like the sigining, I dont think he is quite finished. Will he be like pre-2005 edmonds? of course not. But his numbers should be better now that hes actually in a hitters park (which is how wrigley is playing this year). he was 5 for his last 16 in may. so he still has a bit left.
Dont know how I can cheer him, but if i could do it for Rodman when he joined the bulls, I figure I can do the same with him. As long as he performs, thats all that matters.

But can you talk incessantly about the Yankees and Red Sox? It is a much bigger requirement than Cub Player Predictions...... ;)
As a Cardinal fan who has attended 6 different World Series games, Lou Brock Day, Bob Gibson Day, and about 15 Cardinals Cubs Games......
I wish Jim Edmonds well, and hope he hits the he11 out of the ball except when playing the Cardinals.
In fact, I hope he leads the Cubs to a nice little second place finish. My he go 4-4 every day, with the Cubs losing by one run.

StantheMan -- Satire suits you!
I wish Jimmy well, too. I just honestly don't think there's much left in the tank, though. A steady decline over the last three years is not a good sign.
I'm going to brush up on my Yankess/RedSox banter so I can be part of the board! :D
