There happens to be a lot of talk on this forum about the major league stadiums, but there's almost nothing about the minor league ballparks, some of which are absolutely incredible.

The one minor league park that I want to go to is the one in Camden, New Jersey. (Campbell's Field). I've seen pictures of it on digitalballparks.com, and that place is absolutely amazing.

I don't have any pictures myself, but I would love to see some of yours. The minor league ballpark that I most frequently visit is New Britain Stadium (Home of the AA New Britain Rock Cats). It's all right, but there are much better parks out there. I've also been to the Connecticut Defenders ballpark in Norwich, and Legends Field in Tampa. And I've been on the Metro North Train by the home of the independent Bridgeport Bluefish, which is actually a very nice park.

The only ones I've ever been to

I was thinking about going on a summer road trip next year and see games in MLB cities from Milwaukee to Baltimore but I think I might just hit up games in the Carolina, Southern, and Appalachian leagues. Probably end up being alot cheaper and just as fun.

For sentimental reasons, Murnane Park, Utica, New York; and MacArthur Stadium, Syracuse, New York, respectively. There's something about these old minor-league parks that's like stepping into a time-warp back to the old days of baseball: the single-tiered, rickety grandstands, the wooden fences with ads all over, the fact that usually they are surrounded by old, residential urban neighborhoods instead of acres of parking lots. You gotta love it.

The Ballpark At Harbor Yards, is the home of the Bridgeport Bluefish (Connecticut) of the Atlantic League. The gritty industrial feel is neat. The train runs just yards outside the RF fence, which I love.
The park is within walking distance of the Port Jefferson Ferry Pier, and it's always a great atmosephere on the ferry & at the game when hundreds of LI Duck fanatics take the trip over to see the game against the Ducks arch rival.
Love the name too.

Regarding Keyspan Park, it's in keeping with the amusement park theme, along with an actual boardwalk connecting the main concourse to the outfield, free standing concessions, etc.

Makes me think of the minor league ballpark from the Richard Pryor remake of Brewster's Millions where the train tracks actually went through the outfield and they had to stop play when a train came.

They play one game every year, called the Rickwood Classic. This game is to raise money to maintain this beautiful stadium. I am not sure, but I think that this game is a part of the regular season in the Southern League.

Perhaps the most anachronistic facility in all of baseball: PGE Park in Portland. It's an 80-year-old relic of a stadium that was never intended to be a baseball venue, yet has been the home of Portland Beavers baseball for over half a century. It has a stately-looking roofed grandstand that's far too massive to be considered quaint; the stadium probably holds about 10,000 more seats than the Beavers could ever hope to fill. For such a grand old park, it inexplicably has an artificial turf surface, and a towering wall of luxury suites just emerge behind home plate. The park is oriented away from the downtown skyline; the hulking edifice that houses the Multnomah Athletic Club (which originally built the stadium in the 1920s) dominates the outfield panorama. For everything great that the park has going for it, there's some flaw that detracts from it. For better or for worse, though, PGE Park is undoubtedly among the most unique venues in the minors.

Still a good view, espically when your seats face the captial, but man is it hard to replace a classic! On the plus side if you go to the last link, you can see/read about the gold seats in the outfield they took from the old watt powell park to help people remember the old stadium. I wish more teams would do that!

Yeah, it's an odd little park. The MAC building looks like it needs a scoreboard on it. But I do love that street-level view of the field.

I would have loved to have attended a game in War Memorial Stadium in Buffalo. The movie The Natural was filmed there and was also the home of the AAA Bisons for some time before they finally moved downtown. Almost deliberately so; Coney Island revels in being the last remaining New York icon untouched by Disney, not scrubbed and corporatized within an inch of its life.

I've never been there but it looks great.

I might make a road trip there.

I went there 7-8 times in the last two AAA years which were 1983-84. It has a nice park outside of the park but it is in industrial area. I got there so early that I could walk in without giving my ticket. It was a time you could talks with the players that were more "Hi how you doing?". Those were the days.

The two things that struck me most was the closeness of the field and industrial warehouse that was past the right field wall. It reminded me of the old stadium pictures showing the close proximity to the community to stadium that was common in the early part of the century. I wonder if the surivial of Bosse field was the inspiration of the Baltimore's new stadium and other since then.

Thanks for the great ideas. Now I need to find a way out to Portland to check that place out.

If any team ever goes back to Dubois County, IN; you need to check that stadium out.

Old Favorite: The prior stadium in Chattanooga. That was like walking into 1940. You could almost see the Negro Leaguers running around the field.

Bridgeport is a must see. Photos will never do it justice. Walking up the place starts the feeling as it is built low to the ground, but elivated. A great enterance. Then there are the ships and train and the smoke stack. Often the train stops in RF and the drivers will hang out the window to watch. You really can not beat that place.

Salt Lake City is a need to see place for anyone that has not yet.

Every upsate New York field is wort seeing They all have great views and great feels to them. Hudson Valley might be the least with that, but they even have a uniqueness to them as you drive through the Prison facility.

How about Joliet? That's a great one to see as well.

The Dragons are the Reds low Single A club. It's one of the best places to watch a ballgame. SI lists it as one of the 10 toughest tickets to get in all of sports since they are always sold out. However, tickets are easily had.

Ok, I am back from my trip to Memphis and I have tons of photos from Autozone Park. My girlfriend and I went to 2 games. One was a day game, the other a night game. I didn't take my camera for the night game. By then I was tired of lugging it around on the trip, but I got great photos of the day game thanks to my dad's great camera with telephoto lenses. The park is absolutely beautiful and nessled nicely in downtown Memphis.

The first 2 shots are from outside the park showing the area that it is situated in. The last 2 shots are looking down the 3rd baseline and the 1st baseline.

The third is looking down the 3rd baseline from the concourse walkway that is on top of the left field wall and in front of the grassy hill seating in left field. The fourth is of Redbird Nick Stavinoha (who made is MLB debut yesterday against the BOSOX and got his first MLB hit) hitting a homerun over my head.

Some of those parks could pass as major league parks if they were built in the early part of the 20th century. I mean when you look at Fenway and Wrigley, they are considered major league parks because that's what they looked like back then but in today's world parks like these wouldn't even be considered as a possible new park.

Bet half the people on this board wish some of these parks replaced some of the more modern parks. Though for people in Minnesota, Tampa, and Miami I can't blame you.

Roosevelt Stadium, Union City, NJ. It was primarily a high school football and baseball stadium, but also housed semi-pro ball. This would have been a cool place to have played high school baseball.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/62/RooseveltStadium1.jpg

"Roosevelt Stadium This sporting arena (not to be confused with Jersey City, New Jersey's Roosevelt Stadium) opened November 25, 1937 as part of the New Deal's federally-funded Works Progress Administration Project. Originally the site of the Hudson County Consumers Brewery Company, the art deco[19] stadium was bounded on the east by Summit Avenue and on the west by Kerrigan Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard between 24th and 26th Streets. Roosevelt Stadium stood 15 rows deep, seated 18,000 people, and housed events in football, soccer, track, boxing, and semi-pro baseball, as well as numerous special events, from carnivals and Fourth of July fireworks shows to an exhibition baseball game featuring Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. The stadium's most noteworthy annual event was the Thanksgiving football "Turkey Game," held since 1919 between rivals Emerson High School's Bulldogs and Union Hill High School's Hillers. Its last Turkey Game took place on November 25, 2004, with Emerson victorious 21-0. It was demolished in the fall of 2005 to make way for the new Union City High School and Athletic Complex, which is scheduled for completion in September 2008."

Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, Florida. Probably my favorite of the minor league ballparks i have been to, which number close to a hundred. Visited in 2004 and then returned a month ago. They have made many upgrades/renovations to the park since my first visit. It is set in a beautiful location, on a city island just off the Atlantic Ocean. The park itself is quaint and has a old school, throwback feel but you dont feel cramped at all. Of course the awesome weather and picturesque setting definately do not hurt.

The name is silly, but I really enjoyed the Corpus Christi Hooks park, Whataburger Field. I've been told that the layout is very similar to the Round Rock Express' Dell Field, but here you have a nice view of the Bay bridge in right, and you can watch gigantic tanker ships leave port directly behind left. The entire concourse is open, and unlike some other places with the same feature, you can actually continue to watch the game if you need to leave your seat.

Tickets and food/drinks are exceptionally affordable, and you can bring your own picnic to the outfield berms. Only problem is that the nearby offsite parking lots are not paved, and you can get nasty dust swarms when the wind kicks up (which is often in Corpus)

Count me as a fan of The Diamond as well. I always liked driving by on I-95 as a kid and being impressed by the size of it....it looked like a major league park.

When I got old enough to drive, every summer my friends and I would take the drive from Southern Maryland down to Richmond to catch a game. It was just a fun atmosphere in general--glad to know that a new team is moving in. I'd much rather see it renovated than bulldozed for another ballpark.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Minor League Baseball will hold a free, public Grand Opening at the renovated Durham Athletic Park (DAP), in Durham, N.C., this Saturday, August 15, from noon until 5pm. The event will feature a softball game with Durham politicians, area baseball coaches and former Minor League Baseball and Major League Baseball players; several Minor League Baseball, city and local college mascots; free food and drinks; the Durham Divas cheerleaders; and a child's play area, among other activities.
Minor League Baseball is operating the DAP, the former home of the Durham Bulls which was made famous by the 1980s movie, "Bull Durham." The governing body of the sport is setting up an academy at the facility and will use it as a training center for business and facility operations in the baseball industry. DAP will also host games for North Carolina Central University, as well as other Durham city events.

"We are pleased to be able to reopen Durham Athletic Park with this public celebration," said Minor League Baseball President Pat O'Conner. "The vision of the citizens and community leaders to make this possible speaks well of their affection for the DAP. Minor League Baseball is honored to be a part of such a landmark's restoration and feels privileged to be entrusted with the operation of such an important part of professional baseball's history."

"The grand opening our beloved Durham Athletic Park is an exciting day for our community since this historic landmark holds a special place in the hearts of Durham residents," said City of Durham Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell. "The Durham Athletic Park has been an integral part of this community since the early 1900s. This long-awaited renovation will allow it to once again serve as a vital recreational site for Durham.

"A big 'thank you' goes out to our citizens who overwhelmingly voted to support this endeavor and bring our beloved Durham Athletic Park back to its former glory with all the added amenities of today. A Durham icon, one we are known for throughout the country, is now restored and can proudly stand as another Durham historic landmark that says so much about the wonderful community we are and will continue to be," added Bell.

I agree. We parked in the Target lot as well. The park itself is beautiful, and is within walking distance of the NJ Transit rail station, so it's not necessary to drive there. The only thing I didn't like was the double level, ad covered outfield walls, which blocked the view beyond the walls from the lower seats. The view from there is a bit sterile, IMO. Otherwise, a great experience. The fans were really into it.
