The Mets have spent so much time in first place the last few seasons they act sometimes as if they have won something because of that. They have not won anything. They could not win Game 7 from the Cardinals, they could not win the National League East when they were up seven on the Phillies with 17 to go. Until the Mets do win something, or even show they can take a punch, they are like some baseball version of that old Texas expression, the one about all hat and no cattle.

The sooner fans put last season behind us the better we'll all be.

It adds nothing to the experience, it accomplishes nothing positive and in some ways is counterproductive.

It's a new season, they aren't falling way behind the Phillies, players like Beltran and Heilman will come around. But it would HELP to have the fans behind the team pushing them to do better rather than beating the players, and themselves, up over something that happened in a different season.

Amazingly, for a Lupica article, it's free of literary grasping and stays direct and on topic.

It echos many of the sentiments expressed here, almost to a word. We all feel passionately about the Mets. Some of us have discussed honestly here the truth of our own 'hangover'.
Last fall, many fans felt they cared more than the team they bled for did. Interestingly, and perceptively, the writer points out that it's the fans that are ready to move on, not the players.
