Monfried said Safeco would retain its 85-year-old brand name and continue selling policies through its national network of agents and brokers. He also said Seattle's baseball stadium would remain known as Safeco Field.

How about The Mute.
Oh man, here we go again. Another stadium rebadging. Of all the corporate names I liked Safeco and Wrigley Fields the best. They had nice rings to them and pretty soon they'll both be gone.

"Mariner's Field."
... or maybe "New Kingdome." :)
Of all the corporate names I liked Safeco and Wrigley Fields the best. They had nice rings to them and pretty soon they'll both be gone.
Then keep calling them Safeco and Wrigley. New Comiskey is still New Comiskey to me and everyone knows where I'm talking about when I call it that.

I love that name. Corporate naming rights don't bother me when the name doesn't sound like a corporate name. Safeco and Enron never bothered me because I've never heard those names so they are on par with Fenway, Wrigley, Busch, Shea, etc. in my opinion. A word that means nothing but the title of the stadium as far as I'm concerned. It's the Minute Maids, PNCs, AT&Ts, Petcos, etc. that annoy me because they sound unnatural. I mean, "PNC?" That's not even a name. That's three letters!
Which is why the new Mets ballpark will be "City Field" to me, because it will nothing to do with a bank and everything to do with the place it represents.

Forgot that one. Yes it's a good one. Back when Jerry Buss struck a deal with Great Western to add their name to The Forum I thought that was kinda neat too since it was in effect, a great forum in the west that was aptly named. Some corporate names aren't half bad.
Then, there's the Quicken Loans Arena.

Him running over Coco Crisp on an ATV would be a lot less funny.

I never even realized that the Great Western Forum was a corporate name. Well it now ranks up there with Great American Ballpark as best corporately named facilities in professional sports.

I believe it was one of, if not the first, naming rights deal in pro sports.

How about Olympic National Park?
If the Mariners acquire Mussina next season or trade for him this year, they have some wild life as well. Perfect fit.

The Arco Arena in Sacramento (Kings basketball) might've been before GW, but they were definitely one of the earliest of the contemporary corporate sponsorship rage.

I agree about Great Western Forum. I had no idea that was a corporate name until a year or so later.
Then, there's the Quicken Loans Arena.
And don't forget jobing.com Arena http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a393/JWB13/puke.gif

"I can not imagine a scenario where the name 'Safeco Field' would go away," Monfried said.
Having posted that, I would still love it to be named Mariners Stadium.

"PNC?" That's not even a name. That's three letters!
In stamp collecting, PNC also refers to "plate number coils," (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plate_number_coil) tiny numbers that appear on the bottom of some stamps that come in rolls.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/79/Stamp_US_1996_PNC_big-700px.jpg/500px-Stamp_US_1996_PNC_big-700px.jpg
In a small handful of cases, the presence of certain numbers on the bottom of certain stamps can increase the collectors' value of a stamp a thousandfold! (Don't get too excited - you've got greater odds of someone handing you a free ticket to sit in the front row, behind home plate, at your favorite ballpark than you've got of coming across one of those stamps.)

In the slim chance that it happens, what numbers might those be??

Yeah but its not like Gund was all that loved here. While Gund is a good man and has done a lot of good in Cleveland his ownership of the Cavs leaves much to be desired. Ironically Progressive Field has gotten more backlash even though Progressive employs 10,000+ more people in Cleveland than Quicken Loans does.

Rich Stadium in Buffalo is the oldest I recall. There is also the Carrier Dome at Syracuse

Another NFL stadium, Shaefer Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., was older by two years in using naming rights and is the oldest that people acknowledge(obvious that Busch Stadium is older, but that's a different debate).
