They just showed highlights of the Cubs game on ESPN, and I noticed the ivy looks brown.

It's usually green, obviously.

Why is this? Is it always brown early in the season?

maybe it didnt get enough water
Spring just started, mother nature does her thing when she can.
Or hopefully Roger Bossard poisoned it

It usually doesn't start growing and greening up until early to mid May.
Yech! The top picture indicates that Tom Arnold sang the stretch that day.

You have to remember it was only 2 weeks or so ago, they had a snow storm. I think it got warm, then cold again and prematures the ivy. It should be green again by 1st week of June

what's up with those seats that arent facing the field? It looks like theyre facing the center field bleachers.

Those seats are obviously aligned with Waveland Avenue, and I'm going to guess that they're that way because they can get more seats on the roof that way than if they tried to angle them to face the field.
[Snark warning ON] Why doesn't some developer just do the obvious thing, buy one of the buildings across the street, knock it down, and erect a 20-story tower like we all know they want to? [Snark warning OFF]
Those are rooftop seats. They're outside the stadium and across the street.
They face that way because they're built straight on top of old apartment buildings. They're supposedly privately owned and not affiliated with the cubs.

It's basically already been said, but the ivy always looks like that for the beginning of the season until it starts growing again.

that he did, and throw the opening pitch
that he did, and throw the opening pitch
I'm glad he's aligned himself with Cubs fans and WGN.
You can keep him:highfive:

But-for the likely neighborhood zoning restrictions, that probably would have been done already at this point.

UPS is sponsoring the ivy this season. It will be brown all year.

Interesting note on the rooftop seats - The Cubs have come to an agreement with all the building owners for a 14% commission on rooftop ticket sales.
The Cubs put up windscreens blocking the view a few years ago to stop the freeloading. Eventually they took them down after an agreement was reached.
Supposedly one of the buildings was holding out on their commission payment to the Cubs, and they were threatening to put up windscreens again.

Winter = not very nice to plants.
They will bloom and be green soon enough.

That is lame. It doesn't block too much of the field.

Maybe Moises Alou has been "watering" the ivy.

Were the buildings reinforced somehow? Seems like a dangerous thing to build big bleachers on top of old apartment buildings that I'm sure weren't designed to withstand that extra load.
I can just picture the Cubs finally making it to the NLCS or even WS, having one of those things absolutely packed to the gills, then in the background in the middle of a pitch during the bottom of the 2nd the whole thing suddenly gives way with everybody on top.
That's an excellent question. ...
Hopefully they have to rip it all down :)

:eek:The City of Chicago recently forced the owners of the rooftop "bleachers" and other attractions to "rebuild" those bleachers to get them up to City code. This happened about a couple of years ago, and some of the rooftop owners had to spend upwards to $100,000 to get the seats and everything else ready for a City inspector. And those owners griped and moaned about it for a while, but they eventually conformed. They knew that if a City inspector came to their door and their stuff didn't pass...they'd be out of business.
Remember...it used to be that people who lived in the buildings could just go up to the top of their building with a lawn chair and a cold one and watch the game. Not anymore...with all the events leading up to the Cubs' massive popularity (i.e., WGN's change from a local TV station to a nation superstation, the Tribune Company's acquisition of the Cubs and Wrigley Field, the team's national exposure, Harry Caray's rise to national fame, the 1984 National League East Division Title, etc.), now private companies basically bought out the rooftops of the buildings and set themselves up to make a killing. And the Cubs finally caught on the phenomenon, and decided to do something they should've done a long time ago...made the rooftop owners pay up, or no view.
