View Full Version : Longer Bullpens?

I just recently read an article that states that a pitcher cannot complete the full 100 pitch game to the best of their ability if they are only throwing 50 pitch bullpens. This seems very reasonable as baseball is one of the only sports that inflicts less fatigue to take on more fatigue.
In the article it states that Daisuke Matsuzaka throws 100-150 pitch bullpens. If you watch a game that he pitches, it seems to work out for him. He always stays up there at his starting velocity, whether it's the first or ninth inning.
I have yet to see a pitcher who does not do this, achieve the same success.
Lastly, heres the article:http://www.pitching.com/article/tim-lincecum-vs-roy-oswalt-the-battle-of-the-small-power-pitchers/
All comments are strongly appreciated, as this is supposed to be a thread of serious discussion.

To throw 100 pitch games, I would think it's obvious that you have to be able to throw 100+ pitch bullpens.
However, you have to work your way up to 100 pitches over maybe 5-10 weeks.

You're singing my tune.
The most pitching common sense on the planet.
Spend a day there and after an hour take notice of how high your eyebrows have gotten as you realize there are no gimmicks, no convoluted language, no ego, just good old fashioned advice that so many find refreshing. Now, it is what I teach and is why my freshman son has not iced his arm in 2 years and is now throwing almost as hard as the seniors.
And this 40 year old man is now back up in the upper 70's and may hit 80 this spring in my men's league.
Read everything. He tells you just about everything for free and offers a 50 page booklet of knowledge.
Have fun.

Chris gets it. Why don't HS, college and MLB coaches?
Could you imagine Tiger Woods taking 34 swings a day because that is half as many as he usually takes during an outing.
Or a basketball shooter taking only 10-15 shots in practice because he usually takes 20-30 in a game.
When baseball learns how backwards a lot of their training methods are...I'll probably be dead.
Why did we have 3 man rotations and guys easily logging 250+ innings? Because they could.

Speaking of bullpens...
Ever do a bullpen where a catcher sets up and if the pitcher can't hit the spot, he lets it fly by him (short of risking injury). Do you know how annoying it gets when you keep missing the target? Do you know how much harder pitchers try to hit the target so that they can hear the mitt sound?
Catchers in bullpens catch all of a pitchers mistakes.
Try throwing 25 pitches to one spot. Can you hit it 15 times?
Try throwing another 25 to a new spot, and so on.
Try doing 100 pitches in about an hour. Not 50 in 20 minutes.
Then and only then are you doing a real bullpen that will garner you the game results that you desire.
