My son and I would appreciate constructive comments on his hitting mechanics. Per BoardMember's advice back in January he's been working hard to get rid of an arm bar. His cue now is to "hit the pitcher in the mouth" with his lead elbow. He'll soon be 13, is 5'10" and weighs 150. He'll play 13U AABC for a Midland sponsored team this year in the South West Ohio League (if it ever stops raining).
The last swing in the clip he hit an absolute rocket that nicked the coaches shirt sleeve (behind the L-screen) as it went past.
I'd also like to acknowledge Chris O'Leary's article on his Hitting Mechanic Blog entitled, How to Teach the Major League Swing. Five fundamental steps. I'm a big proponent of the KISS principle and this is simple to teach and learn. Great job Chris!

That is a big boy!
Not bad. He appears to have a lot of extra movement and is a little "long" with his swing. He is on the right track!
Good luck to him:)

Agreed. We've talked about the need to be more compact. I think he's equating long with power. He'll get fooled by some off-speed this year and realize he needs to shorten it. He is creating some decent bat speed though!

It could also be a matter of his body being out of whack from growing. How big to you think he'll get? When I was his age I thought the same thing. Except I wasn't quite to big (and I'm still that way).
I know there are drills out there to help shorten up.

His doc says 6'3" to 6'5". Any suggestions for drills?
Utley for MVP this year? That'd be 3 Phils in a row...

O yea Utley is gonna win the MVP he already had a HR yesterday while going 2-3
I believe.

I can't imagine being 6'3. If you can pitcure the Phillies Carlos Ruiz, you can pitcure my build. Ruiz's true height, not his listed height.
Yeah, Utley for MVP. Burrell will have a big year. Phillies finish third behind the Mets and division winning Braves:(

There's a little too much blurring to say much, but the sequencing and timing looks good.

I agree with this.
He wraps the bat a bit just before he launches, which may add 1/2 a frame to his swing.

Hi Tim! Right now, your son is a very linear hitter with an "upright posture". He has a tremendous weight shift into contact, and his hands drop to the ball rather then staying above the ball and allowing the bat head to get there on an angular path.
This hard linear movement and dropping the hands will really make it hard to elliminate the bar that still exists in his swing.
If you watch his "check swing" early in the clip, he slides and holds vs. blocking-turn-hold.
Dropping the hands causes a straightening out of the lead arm causing bar..........

I've gotta go eat, so someone here will hopefully explain torso tilt and the angular plane vs. upright posture and dropping the hands straightening out the lead arm on the drop.........:highfive:
