Seems the smart move. The stolen base can get in a pitcher's head and perhaps create RBI opportunities, but 50 stolen bases aren't as valuable as 30 home runs. If you're a fan of stats and sabermetrics, you'll know that linear weights give 1.4 for every home run and 0.3 for every stolen base. Stolen bases are excited but often overrated in their game-winning value.

Perhaps. However, speed can be valuable in close games. Or, if can affect an entire team. Take the Angels. If you remember, they went a couple weeks in July between home runs. A team like the Angels lives and dies on the bases. It all depends on your team's philosophy. The A's for example, don't steal a lot. So it's what kind of team the Marlins want to be

But the Marlins are in a rebuilding phase, and it's hard to build a team around speed if you don't already have a lot of good baserunners.

That is true

Another thought: now that Cameron Maybin is a Marlin, he could bat leadoff and Hanley could be groomed as a heart-of-the-lineup hitter. He has more than enough talent for it.

Isn't he starting in the minors? But you're right, whenever he comes back up, that could work

yeah true, still I don't see why Hanley can't hit 30 homers and steal 50 bases, he certainly as the athletic attributes to do so. Stolen bases may be somewhat overrated, but good baserunning and speed in the field isn't. A play from first to third on a single can really help a team out in a close game...

What if they mean stolen home plate.

A well-timed steal can be very valuable. With a runner on third and one out, it can take away the 6-4-3/4-6-3 Double Play, allowing the runner on third to score on a groundout to 1B/2B. With no outs, a runner on first, and a guy who hits alot of ground balls at the plate, it can not only remove the 6-4-3/4-6-3 DP, but also allows the runner to take third on a ground ball to 1B, creating an RBI opportunity for the next batter, even if he grounds/flies out. Number of outs, who's at the plate, and who's on deck all affect the value of a stolen base.
Say for example, less than 2 outs, you have a base stealer on 1B, a guy who hits into alot of DPs at the plate, and a high RBI hitter on deck. If you don't steal and the batter hits into a DP, the high RBI guy has noone to drive in [except himself via a solo HR]. But, you steal 2B, and the batter grounds out, now you're on either 2B (if he hits to the left side) or 3B (if he hits to the right side) with a high RBI hitter at the plate, who can score you. Even better if you had 0 outs, because then he can swing for the fences, and score you on a Sac Fly should the ball not make it out of the park.

They just signed Ramirez to a long term deal last week.

He can't hit an outside fastball lately.

Hanley is the best player in all of baseball, in my opinion. What the Marlins have done and what they need to do, is just let him go out there and play. Everything he does, hit for power and utilize his speed, will help bring in wins.

I attended the game on Sunday and Hanley crushed two homers.
