--Greeting CKL owners. Please cast your ballot here for our 1968 All Stars. We will be selecting 30 players. Vote for 2 at each position, plus 2 wild card selections (a third person at 2 spots). Votes will be counted as 5 points for 1st team, 3 points for 2nd team and 1 point for getting a wild card nod. Vote for 8 SP. Please list them inorder as I'll be counting 8,7,6, etc. Vote for 4 relief pitchers (4.3.2.1). You've got a week to think things over and get these in. We've got 5 more days of games(15 total so we could see some change in the best candidates) til the break and then we'll have 3 days off in both CKL and real time 3/22-24). Deadline for submitting ballots is the 23rd.

--There are a number of potential vote getters who are playing somewhere other than their primary real life position for their CKL team. Please keep the following in mind when casting your ballot; Lee May LF not 1B, Felipe Alou LF not CF, Pete Rose 2B not RF, Willie Horton RF not LF, Ken Harrelson LF not RF, Carl Yastrzemski RF not LF, Vic Davalillo LF not RF, Rick Mondy LF not CF, Frank Robinson LF not RF and Dick Allen RF not LF.

--Willie Mays leads all CFers in OBP, SLG, HR and RBI. The Knight's elder statesman still plays a VG CF too. The Sey Hey Kid is making a bid for his third MVP:gt. Billy Williams is another MVP contender. He leads all LF in HR and SLg and the league in RBI. Dick McAuliffe leads all 2B in virtually every offensive category. Jim Fregosi is amoung the leaders in all offensive categories at SS,although he is first only in runs (and I couldn't put him ahead of Gen Alley at this point). I probably couldn;t justify voting for him but catcher Elston Howard has a line of 418/465/747 in about 100 PA.
--The pitching is less inspiring. Sonny Seibert is 9-4 with a 2.26 ERA and should make it. Relievers Eddie Watt, Bobby Bolin and Fred Lasher could be candidates if they get hot.

Yet another good reason to obtain the Diamond Mind game! When voting for my all star selections, I simply choose the option of minimum X games played at a position, set the position I want to select as the option, and DM gives a report of all players who have started X games at the position. Then on to the next position (chosen from a drop down list of positions). So quick and easy!

Guys...unless there is a serious objection, I would like to abstain on the All Star voting...still trying to find my way to to the clubhouse and I don't think I am well-versed enough to cast an informed and well-considered ballot.

Here are the Legends players that I feel are deserving of all star berths. I have not listed anyone from my roster that I don't intend to vote for.

Bill Freehan, catcher: Other than Howard (111 PA) and Dietz (107 PA), Freehan has the highest OPS of any catcher (843), and has 366 PA. He leads all regular catchers in HR, runs, RBI, and slugging. He also has played stellar defense, throwing out 49% of stolen base attempts.

Willie McCovey, first base: Second in AB among first basemen. Leads in HR, Runs, RBI, slugging; second in OBP.

Hank Aaron, RF: Even with Yaz having another great season, Aaron is a bit better. He's first in OPS and runs, second in HR and RBI, first in SB, and is playing a great RF.

Luis Tiant, SP: 12-4 record, sixth in ERA among starters, best WHIP among starters, first in strikeouts.

Fergie Jenkins, SP: 11-6 record, seventh in ERA, 1.02 WHIP, leads league in innings pitched.

I don't have any objection, Joe. But feel free to vote anyway if you want. You can just load in the DB and go on the stats if you want. Heck, that's what the voters do in real life!:)

Sigh... if only there was a way to sort the stats on the text reports (or the website) by position. Would make this a whole lot easier.

C: Jerry Grote, Bill Freehan
1B: Willie McCovey, Mickey Mantle
2B: Dick McAuliffe, Davey Johnson
3B: Mike Shannon, Jim Ray Hart (Ward doesn't play enough)
SS: Gene Alley, Jim Fregosi
LF: Frank Robinson, Billy Williams
CF: Jimmy Wynn, Willie Mays
RF: Hank Aaron, Carl Yastrzemski, Dick Allen, Tony Oliva

SP: Sam McDowell, Luis Tiant, Dean Chance, Dave McNally, Fergie Jenkins, Tom Seaver, Sonny Siebert, Bob Gibson

RP: Clay Carroll, Jim Perry, Ron Kline, Steve Hamilton

A bit tough to judge the relievers, as really the only stats available are save-based.

--Dan, the team pitching reports are the best way to go for reviewing relievers. Or starters for that matter.

That's what I ended up doing for most of my ballot. Just a little hard to compare without looking at the leaders in ERA or whatever for relievers.

--I always put somebody from each team on my ballot. The Gamblers haven't made that easy this year though:noidea. I was leanign toward Mel Stottlemyre, but he got bombed in his last start and drove his ERA over 4. I'll probably go with Pete Ward now. He has missed half the season, but his rates are great and there aren't alot of compelling candidates at 3B.
--The other cellar dwellers offer better options. The Angels have two starting pitchers who could make it strictly on merit - Dave McNally and Milt Pappas, although I'll probably vote for only one of them. The Badgers have LFer Cleon Jones and SP Woody Fryman. Neither are exactly a lock, but you could vote for either even without considering their place as team token.
--The surprise for me maybe only having one candidate from the first place Hard Cider. Tom Haller is having a terrific season, but Freehan and maybe Grote could edge him out. Dick Allen and Norm Cash have a shot also, but neither is a sure thing.

--Dan, a few of your outfielders are out of alignment (including 2 of your own). Wynn has been in CF all year. Alou has been in LF. Billy Williams has been playing LF for me all year.

C: Bill Freehan, Jerry Grote, Tom Haller
1B: Willie McCpvey, Mickey Mantle
2B: Dick McAulliffe, Felix Millan
3B: Mike Shannon, Pete Ward
SS: Jim Fregosi, Bert Campaneris
LF: Billy Williams. Cleon Jones
CF: Willie Mays, Jimmy Wynn
RF: Hank Aaron, Carl Yastrzemski, Dick Allen

SP: Sam McDowell, Sonny Seibert, Luis Tiant, Fergie Jenkins, Dean Chance, Dave McNally, Tom Pheobus, Tom Seaver
RP: Phil Regan, Frank Linzy, Clay Carroll, Joe Hoerner

Fixed my ballot.

And Mark, no Gene Alley? Leads the league's SS in OPS, while playing Ex defense (Fregosi and Campaneris are Av). Actually, after Wynn and Mantle, he's got the highest OPS of any Gold Sox.

--SS is a tough field. Alley, Fregosi, Campaneris and the surprising Roberto Pena are all having terrific seasons. Alley made it a little easier for me by getting himself hurt. Similarly Norm Cash missing almost a month clarified the firstbase slot and Frank Robinson the same opened a spot in LF for Cleon Jones.

Several tough decisions this year, but I guess it's always that way. A little surprised to see Dan pick Grote over Freehan, but I can understand it.

Catcher: Bill Freehan, Jerry Grote
First Base: Willie McCovey, Mickey Mantle
Second Base: Dick McAuliffe, Pete Rose (not my best choice, but I wanted to get a Diablo on the team)
Third Base: Mike Shannon, Pete Ward (makes it as my Gambler representative)
Shortstop: Jim Fregosi, Gene Alley Only put Fregosi first because of Alley's lack of playing time - through no fault of his own except getting in the way on the bases.
Left Field: Billy Williams, Willie Horton
Center Field: Willie Mays, Jimmy Wynn
Right Field: Hank Aaron, Carl Yastrzemski, Richie Allen, Tony Oliva

The last pick was very tough, and Tony Oliva just edges out Norm Cash due to more playing time.

Starting Pitchers: Sonny Siebert, Luis Tiant, Dean Chance, Dave McNally, Fergie Jenkins, Milt Pappas, Sam McDowell, Woodie Fryman (bumps Tom Phoebus so I can have a Badger representative)
Relievers: Phil Regan, Frank Linzy, Gary Nolan, Cecil Upshaw

Not very difficult overall this time. Toughest cuts were SP and in the OF.
