Only thing I heard is that the Tampa Bay Rays were talking to him, but that's it. Besides, I doubt anyone will sign him. Don't be so shocked. ;)

stbf: Tampa Bay [was] talking to him

jeff borris has spoken with 7 clubs but tampa bay is not one of 'em.
whatever talk occurred in tampa bay talk was most likely internal only.

The Rangers owner said that is one decision he would veto if Ryan tried to sign Bonds.

Be interesting to see how much attendance would go up for the Rays(17,000) or Royals(20,000)

I never heard that, could you give me a source? Not that I doubt you, I'd just like to see it.

Wouldn't surprise me. More reason to hate Tom Hicks.

That would be nice if the Rangers would sign Bonds. Two supposed juicers on your squad.

Didn't realize it was so hard to find 4 day old news.

At Surprise, Ariz., Rangers owner Tom Hicks said he’d never be tempted to sign home run king Barry Bonds.

‘‘We want character players,’’ Hicks said. ‘‘That’s part of the plan.’’

What if new team president Nolan Ryan proposed such a move?

Hicks said that won’t happen, but added: ‘‘There are very few things that I would probably veto Nolan for ever recommending. That would be one of them.’’

I think there is more then that on each team, with 86 players being named on the Mitchell Report, that came from one towel boy and one trainer. Then, throw in the 38 minor leaguers that tested hot in 2007, to figure out how real random testing would work in MLB. Then if you believe what Caminiti/Canseco saying that 40-60% MLB players used PED's and other players like Paxton Crawford/Tom House(early 70's) who said many on their clubs were using, I think that 2 is a very low number of supposed players juicing for 1 club, especially without strict independent testing and no HGH test, so far.

I don't know how hard it was to find. I didn't search for it.

That wasn't on Lone Star Ball, though, which sort've surprised me. I was expecting it to be older news.

Yup, more reason to hate Hicks. If they want character guys, what's up with Milton Bradley? I'm pretty sure having Bonds for a few months in the hope a contender will give you something nifty for him at the deadline is not going to irrevocably destroy the futures of young players.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Tim Lincecum is screwed.

I meant for me. I knew I had just read it in the last few days but had a hard time finding it.

Yeah, Hicks says he wants strong character players, then signs Bradley and is rolling the dice a bit with Josh Hamilton.

Ah yes, Hamilton. I don't think of him so much since it's supposedly behind him and he's not highly publicized for being an active jerk.

Tom Hicks is everything that's wrong with the world. /hyperbole

I'm more interested in Sammy Sosa signing somewhere. On the 10th anniversary of 1998, he could be comeback player of the year.

What MLB could do to help that become a reality is, in honor of the "10th anniversary", allow Sosa to play the whole season with the exact number of drug tests that he was subject to in 1998-none. Someone could secretly tell him it will be okay and of course none of us fans would ever know. Other then that he has more chance to be has been of the year.

I guess MLB could arrange something like that to "honor" 1998, but then the "10th anniversary of 1998" is not worthy of any honor.

Fehr Says Union Will Investigate Why No Bonds Offers as It Examines Free-agent Market

Tampa Bay acknowledged last month that it had internal discussions about the prospect of pursuing Bonds. St. Louis manager Tony La Russa had interest in Bonds but Cardinals management decided against opening talks.

"I hope that the recommendations Sen. Mitchell made in that regard will be honored," Fehr said. "Obviously, the commissioner showed great respect, and I believe it's fair to say deference, to Sen. Mitchell's recommendations, and this is one of those."

No players have been called in for investigatory interviews since Cleveland pitcher Paul Byrd spoke with baseball lawyers Dec. 17. In addition, hearing dates have not been scheduled for Kansas City outfielder Jose Guillen, who appealed the 15-day suspension Selig imposed in early December.

Hard to beleive that all 14 clubs in the AL couldn't use Bonds bat or the increase in attendance that Bonds would bring.

Barry Bonds Still Wants to Play This Year

Email this Story

Mar 19, 4:37 PM (ET)

NEW YORK (AP) -Unsigned and thus far unwanted, Barry Bonds still wants to play this year.
"I'm not going to retire. I don't think that's going to happen," he told MLB.com Tuesday. "I'm working out. I'm training. If my phone rings, it rings. If it don't, it don't. I have a cell phone. I have a Blackberry. They work. If something comes up, I'm sure they'll let me know. I'll come back in July if I have to. It depends on the circumstances."

Baseball's home-run king was indicted in November on four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice stemming from 2003 grand-jury testimony in which he denied knowingly using illegal performance-enhancing drugs. He pleaded innocent.

"I want to win a championship or else I want to keep trying to win a championship until there's nothing left inside me," Bonds said. "I can still play."

Milton Bradley has a history of being a disagreeable sort. I would rather have Hamilton any day of the week, though he is certainly a gamble. I have never heard of Josh Hamilton having personality issues, just substance abuse ones. If he can control his demons he could put up monster numbers in Texas. I really hope he rewards the confidence Hicks has placed in him.

I don't know what Hamilton and Bradley are making this year. Hamilton made about 400k last year, so he probably is not much of a risk. Bradley made 4mil, so he seems to be a greater financial risk. I would love to have Josh Hamilton, but I would not want Bradley.

It is interesting to hear the MLBPA bring up collusion in the Bonds case. While it is certainly a possibility, I think a more likely assumption is that the enormous baggage he carries has scared teams off.
