Anyone have any experience working with young golfers who also play baseball?

One of the hitters I'm working with has a VERY golfy swing.

I'm not sure where to start.

Never found it to be a problem either way. My best SS is now a D1 golfer.

Never found it to be a problem either way. My best SS is now a D1 golfer.

The issue is that he has had a lack of power and consistency over the years.

Some things I see in his swing...

- Very upright at setup.
- Knees mostly locked.
- Weight ends up over his front foot.
- Weak hip rotation.

I have thought about using a setup that is very different than his golf setup so you don't get bleed over from his golf swing to his baseball swing.

Basically establish two different movement patterns.

Whether or not golf is going to interfere with a baseball swing is going to depend on the athletic ability of the player and his commitment to doing each swing correctly. I've coached rec kids with awful swing mechanics who learned how to golf before they learned how to hit properly.

My short term cure all for bad lower body mechanics is to set the feet in a wide stance with the front heel up, and have them drop the heel rather than stride. It helps balance out the lower body.

These would be indicative of a bad golf swing also.

It's funny this thread has come up. I'm doing the rounds for ST and lots of players are playing golf. It's mainly pitchers but even the hitters are doing it now. Most the hitters aren't the best golfers though, easy money.

Chris,
Do yourself a favor and buy Hogan's "5 fundamentals of golf". Hogan reminds me a lot of Ted Williams in his approach and work ethic. He is a huge believer in using the hips, and if nothing else, you may succeed in creating great golfers. lol

I believe this is a very serious issue for anyone wishing to really excel at one or both. I've reached some good conclusions but have no desire to get into the anecdotal observations posing as real understanding.

If anyone is serious about this subject feel free to PM me.

Yours truly, ........tweena

This is a problem that I solve by what I do in the first batting session with a client at any age 5 to pro. If you get to these kids early you produce amazing results. I emphasize the ball exit spin and understanding of all ball spin. I ask the fathers to build child spin Dr’s by playing all varied ball games like wiffle ball, Billiards, Ping Pong!!, basketball, Tennis, soccer- Ehh ya, football kicking, punting and throwing and golf. There is nothing better than when a kid realizes that backspin creates lift and a 1 wood when hit correctly creates lift and carry! The same goes for hitting line drives with back spin. This all carries over right into pitching and the complete understanding of ball axis direction mastery and understanding.
Great examples of this are Tony Gwinn who led the NCAA Div. 1 basketball in PPG.
Nick Punto averaged over 30 PPG in HS.
Not Golfing boys and girls is wrong and that ain’t right!!
It’s also un-American!!
