View Full Version : Video transfer from a DVD camcorder
I bought a DVD camcorder, thinking it would be easier to transfer video clips to my computer than with my miniDV camcorder. Boy was I wrong. I have downloaded all of the software, downloaded additional conversion programs from the net, and nothing works. I have the mini DVD in the disc drive, which gives me a folder that contains the follwoing type of files: .bup, .ifo, .vob. What do I need to do to convert my clips on the DVD into .wmv files on my computer. Any help would be appreciated!!

i have a sony handycam hdd, i messed around for a long time trying to figure out how to convert stuff but what i do now is the easiest. my camera records in mpeg-2, so i burn it to a dvd, then use a dvd ripper program to convert it to wmv and save on my computer.
the program is Magic DVD Ripper.

Is your camcorder a DVD camcorder?
I just tried magic ripper--I just used the finalized mini DVD from the camera and it did not work.

its a hard drive camera. the mpeg-2 format is a dvd format though.

prism video converter worked great i had a trail version, but i don't remeber were i got it from i'll work on that..

Thank TLO....I downloaded Prism. It was easy to use, but I can't access all of the clips that are on the DVD, and those that I was able to convert had no sound, and were not complete. I am so over this.......

Yes....I have tried to call him a couple of times, but haven't heard back.......I'll try again tomorrow. I was going to send you a copy of this DVD if I ever get it finished!!
As for your question about your pitching--yes it is nasty, but I haven't really followed any of the MM threads here to have any input. If there was something specific you wanted me to address, let me know....

The reason I asked you to talk about what you thought about my pitching was to give an unbiased opinion. You know how it is. When people talk about themselves, others tend to not believe them as much. It helps when someone else who isnt really involved can offer their opinion. Thats just kinda my thought process on that thing.

I have a Sony DVD Handycam. I usually use the software program that came with the camcorder to copy the clips to my computer's hard drive using a USB cable.
Try a little trick. I have no idea how computer and video savvy you are, so I will try to explain in detail: The "vob" files you see are actually the files you want. They actually contain the video and audio, but may be split into what appears to be random clips. But if the clips you shot are relatively short, each "vob" file may be fully intact.
These "vob" files are actually mpeg video files. All you need to do is change the file extension, and they should open with Windows Media Player.
Just change the last three letters after the period (vob) to "mpg". In other words, let's say you have a clip named "clip01.vob". Just change the last three letters, or the file extension, to make the file "clip01.mpg".
You may get a warning saying the file may not work properly. Ignore this. The computer doesn't know you're cheating! If this doesn't work, no harm done. Just change those three letters back to "vob" and you're back where you started!
P.S. If you intend on burning these files to a DVD, you need to change the file extension back to "vob", otherwise they won't work properly in a standard DVD player.

are you formatting the disc? I have that type of handy cam. I will try grabbing a disc and see what I had to do to put the video on my cpu

I formatted it and finalized it after taking the clips.
