I was doing some research earlier and found Ernie Broglio's 1960 statistics: he went 21-9 with a 2.74 ERA and 188 strikeouts in 226 1/3 innings.
Why didn't he win the Cy Young Award?
Let's compare him to the actual winner and the runner up:
Broglio: 21W 9L 9CG 3SHO 226 1/3IP 172H 18HR 100BB 188K 2.74ERA .700WP
V. Law: 20W 9L 18CG 3SHO 271 2/3IP 266H 25HR 40BB 120K 3.08ERA .690WP
Spahn: 21W 10L 18CG 4SHO 267 2/3IP 254H 24HR 74BB 154K 3.50ERA .677WP
Out of all of them, Broglio had the best K/9IP ratio, best strikeout total, best H/9IP ratio, best ERA, best winning percentage, best HRA/9IP ratio...
Sure, he walked a lot more than either of them and he didn't complete as many games, but that is because he didn't start as many games. Spahn started 33 and Law 35 - Broglio started only 24.
Concerning his walks, I think his strikeout total more than compensated for his higher walk total. Out of those three pitchers, he has the best K/9IP-BB/9IP ratio.
Anyway, I just thought it was pretty unfair that Broglio only finished third in Cy Young Award voting that year.
