I am very happy to be in this distinguished group. Now, to be honest, I am a Pirates fan (don't throw anything at me!), but after studying the illustrious history of the REAL Dodgers, I've become a fan.

I'm 50 years old, married with one child, and work for the WV State Tax Dept. I used to play in various bands (I'm a bassplayer), but retired from that several years ago.

I own a copy of Peter Golenbock's wonderful book, "Bums", and last year sat enthralled as I watched "The Ghosts of Flatbush" several times.

I hope you folks will be kind to me, as I'm admittedly a relative newbie to Dodger lore.

However, my favorite players are Pete Reiser, Ralph Branca, Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, and of course, our man Jackie.

and of course let's not forget that Pittsburgh was Branch Rickey's next stop after Brooklyn. and it was as GM of the Bucs that "the Mahatma" issued his famous assessment of his team: "we're in the eighth year of a five year rebuilding program." he had left all his "residue of design" in Brooklyn for which unspeakables took credit.

I'm glad this thread is here. I didn't think I should start a new one.

I am a casual baseball fan. It's my second favorite sport after basketball. I don't have a favorite team, but I tend to root for the underdog. This lingering sentiment of mine starts to rear its head when I pore over baseball history and read about Brooklyn coming up short, time and again, to the damn Yankees. (Yes, I'm a confirmed Yankee hater) I know it's useless, but I find myself rooting for the Dodgers while I read the details.

It's true that I don't have a favorite baseball team. I do have a lifelong favorite basketball team: the San Antonio Spurs. And just thinking about how good things have been for my team lately reminded me how good I have had it as a fan - I only had to wait seventeen years for a championship and just four more for a second one. Meanwhile, other fanbases waited for decades upon decades for championships: Red Sox, 86 years; White Sox, 88 years; Cubs, 100 years and counting. But you guys waited 61 years after so many close calls and for all that suffering, your team was whisked away and never replaced. Just one championship and a void that may never be replaced.

And your situation was special. When I was a kid, there was already a huge gap in status between the players and most of the fans who paid their salaries. During the Dodgers' heyday, that wasn't the case. That had to be amazing to root for a group of players that you felt close to, felt connected to. Modern fans don't feel that - it's just not possible in today's world.

I always think of myself as a lucky fan, but to be honest, I would love to be young in 1950's Brooklyn. I would like to know what that sort of fandom feels like. This is why I've spent a lot of time on this forum reading old threads. The passion you all have is not only real, it's nearly tangible. I read your comments and I always find them compelling. I don't always agree with those comments, and I even find myself getting irritated with them sometimes, but I admire the fierce loyalty you all have. I've always had a general idea in my head of what a "true" sports fan is like; you Dodger fans are the type of fans I've long imagined. O'Malley should have had the decency to change the team name with the move, and you guys deserve the very next expansion franchise MLB approves. It won't make things right, but that's the least that baseball can do for you.

The very next baseball cap I buy will have a big white "B" above the bill.

I was born on Van Siclen Avenue; Brooklyn is an Anglicization of "Bruekelen." EVERY true Brooklyn Dodgers fan has a touch of the Dutch. It's in the air we breathe.

And of course, "New Utrecht" is one of the original villages of Brooklyn. The Van Sicklen family was one of the original Dutch Patroon families of Brooklyn---by the way, there are two streets named for that family---Van Sicklen Street, which retained the K, and Van Siclen Avenue, which didn't. I believe the former is the correct spelling in Dutch.

Welcome KG...........I'm a proud former Brooklynite who always wears his Dodger(B) hat. My 15 yr. old girl asked me what the B stood for and I said: "Honey, sit down & I'll explain it all to you.........Brooklyn, you're Grandpa(gone since '04).........everything." When I finished she was in tears.
