Dykstra was not a throwback. He was a throw-up. His legendary puking episodes are still discussed with awe by those who witnessed them. Also, since he was a bona fide cheater with steroids, he was an omen rather than a throwback.

Dykstra was just about the definition of the word "flake" when he played for the Mets. Back when he first came up...just for a cup of coffee...he was starting to regress and Frank Cashen wanted him sent down. So, Davey Johnson walks over to his locker and tells him "Lenny, we're sending you back to Tidewater so you can find your game." Lenny is stunned, and genuinely so. "How can you do this? What about my fans? What will they think?"

Dykstra may have been a flake and rather childish, but he played the game hard and few players were as fun to watch as Nails. He's one of the players that turned me into a baseball lover when I was a kid.

I loved watching him play also, but there was nothing funny or flaky about his cheating with steroids. And there was nothing funny or flaky about his drinking and that crash into a centuries old sycamore that could have killed both him and Daulton. He shortened his career, and he ultimately cheated both himself and his fans.
