The battle for the 2nd base job should be the most interesting for the Rockies with Jayson Nix, Omar Quintanilla, Marcus Giles, Clint Barmes and they are also going to be experimenting with Jeff Baker and Ian Stewart.

For the 5th outfielder it will be between Cory Sullivan and Scott Podsednik amongst others. With Sullivan already signed to a 1 year 1mil contract and being the Rockies best defensive outfielder I think that Podsednik is just some insurance in case Holliday, Taveras, Hawpe or Spilborghs get injured in ST.

The job for the 4 and 5 spot in the pitching rotation will be Franklin Morales, Kip Wells, Josh Towers, Jason Hirsh and Taylor Buchholz.

The bullpen will need 1 lefty to replace Jeremey Affeldt that is no longer with the club and a couple of the rightys that don't make the starting rotation will join the bullpen.

Projected with some real guessing here for 2nd/ 5th OF/ 4&5 spots/ Bullpen Middlemen

Catcher/ Yorvit Torrealba/ Chris Ianetta
1st base/ Todd Helton
2nd base Jayson Nix
3rd base/ Garrett Atkins
SS/ Troy Tulowitzki
LF/ Matt Holliday
CF/ Willy Taveras
RF/ Brad Hawpe

1/ Aaron Cook
2/ Jeff Francis
3/ Ubaldo Jiminez
4/ Franklin Morales??????????
5/ Kip Wells/ Josh Towers ???????????

Bullpen

Closer/ Manny Corpas
8th/ Brian Fuetes.....if the Rockies sign him and don't trade him
7th/ Luis Vizcaino
Matt Herges/ Ryan Speier/ Taylor Buchholz

Reserve Outfielders / Ryan Spilbourgs/ Cory Sullivan?

Reserve Infielders/ Clint Barmes/ Ian Stewart

Thanks for posting all the info... I will be at the ST complex on Saturday the 16th and will be there every weekend through April.

I'll be sure to update this thread with anything that I see or hear. I will be lucky enough to have on field access to the practice fields- that's where I get most of my communciation with the players and coaches, as well as photos.

One thing I am banking on is Joe Koshansky getting a roster spot. It might not happen right out of ST, but I can see it by May or June. He's good insurance for the aging Todd Helton.

That would be great with the updates Zito. I was going to put Joe Koshansky on the guessing list as a reserve infielder but I couldn't find his name on the 40 man roster I posted and forgot how to spell his last name.

I'm hoping that Omar Quintanilla has a good ST since he is a favorite of mine. There is just something about his name I like:) well that and the soft hands like the other Omar to.

Have fun at Hi Corbett Field and Tucson Electric Park and where ever else you go.

Not that this thread is going to get bumped down to quick with the low traffic in the Rockies section but could a mod sticky this thread and remove the stickys for the 2007 season and playoff threads.

Thank you if you can and no biggie if you can't.

Fuentes will get a raise from $3,525,000 to $5.05 million rather than his request for $6.5 million after saving 20 games in helping the Colorado Rockies reach the World Series for the first time. His case was decided by arbitrators Robert Bailey, Dan Brent and Elliott Shriftman.

Well I believe that is the last Rockies player that we had to secure. Hats off to the front office. They keep doing this down through the years and we will have high hopes of a contender each year. 96-06 was just to long to go through again so soon.

Just got back from the Rockies camp. Word is that Brian Fuentes has been in court the past couple days- He was a no show today as was Josh Towers. My camera batteries wouldn't hold a charge- probably due to the crappy weather. Practice was slated to start at 10 but was delayed until 2. (we actually had snow around the Tucson Metro area yesterday!) When I finally saw the guys come out on the field, they looked good- Aaron Cook looked pretty sharp today. Will report back tomorrow and hope I can resolve the camera issues!

Good luck with the batteries and hope the weather takes a turn to the good.

Weather was better today- Looks like my camera is dead as I tried new batteries and had no luck. I'll hopefully have some pics up that a friend took of me getting autos and stuff. Watched a full day of BP today- Holiday was ripping some long balls. Seth Smith also looked good. Met Josh Tower's wife today- she is very nice and outgoing. I'll be back at it next Saturday as I work all week.

Looking forward to some pictures from ST. The local rags have showed one picture of Torrealba and that is it. Torrealba is saying that his shoulder is feeling better this year and hopes to improve on his throw out % which was only above Estrada last year for NL starting catchers. Quirk also stated how important it was for the pitchers to work on holding the runners better this year with a lot of focus on Ubaldo.

RIP Camera, we will miss you......haaaaaaa!

Yep, Tower's wife is pretty. She was a cheerleader through highschool, and yes, she looks "healthy" I guess you could say. =) She's a very nice person. Torrealba looked good when I saw him hitting on Sunday. Granted I didn't see him throw, but he looked good and he seemed happy about his new contract.

Will give more updates Saturday- I am currently looking for a loaner camera!

Fuentes was in camp on Sunday. He wouldn't answer any questions or sign any autographs, which is par for the course for him.

TUCSON — Come March 31 when the Rockies open the regular season in St. Louis, today's exhibition opener will be a hazy memory.

But blood was pumping and hearts were racing prior to their 7-3 victory over the White Sox. The highlight for the defending National League champions was a solo homer by Troy Tulowitzki in his first at-bat of the Cactus League season.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -After only a half season as their closer, Manny Corpas agreed to a four-year contract with the Colorado Rockies worth $22 million if the team exercises options for 2012 and 2013.

The 25-year-old Panamanian right-hander replaced three-time All-Star Brian Fuentes as Colorado's closer last season. He played an integral role in the club's first World Series berth, where the Rockies lost to the Boston Red Sox.

After earning the closer job on July 7, Corpas saved 19-of-20 games and went 4-2 with a 2.08 ERA, the lowest by a reliever in club history. He starred in the playoffs, going 1-0 with a 0.87 ERA in nine appearances.

Corpas' deal is the longest signed by a Rockies reliever and comes six weeks after shortstop Troy Tulowitzki signed a six-year, $31 million contract, the largest signed by a second-year player.

Corpas, who signed as a non-drafted free agent in 1999, is among the first wave of players to graduate from the Rockies' fledgling Latin American program. He made his first big league appearance on July 18, 2006, and is 5-4 with a 2.53 ERA in 113 career appearances, including 78 last season.

The 2012 club option would cover Corpas' final year of arbitration and the '13 option would cover his first year of free agency.

A guy(don't follow baseball) I know at the TableSteaks(South)pool hall, came up to me and asked if I had ever heard of a Manny Corpas that played for the Rockies. I said sure, that kid has greatness written all over him from what I have seen. Turns out, Danny(who speaks spanish) had given Manny a ride home from the pool hall when his car was in the shop, and on the way home he told Danny he had just been called up by the Rockies, to play for them. Danny gives pool lessons and set some up for Manny who enjoys the game, but I don't know if Danny ever gave him any.

Danny lives in South Denver(near Federal Heights) that is close to Englewood where Manny had a apartment his rookie year when he was first called up by the Rockies. The TableSteaks(South) pool hall is right in the old downtown Englewood area.(Broadway & Hampton)

Hey Zito. Did you get to see Morales pitch yesterday?

Any rumors about Hirsh's sore shoulder?

Missed Morales throwing but I did hear part of the game on the radio since I was working. Saw Hirsh a couple days ago and he seemed fine- I'm betting he has some minor irritation or something. He's been working hard this Spring so he might need a little break or something.

Todd Helton will be serving as a DH this weekend for the AA and AAA games going on at the minor league complex. He'll be guaranteed at least 1 AB per inning. I'll try to get some pics if I can make it down to the field this weekend.

TUCSON — The Rockies moved closer to finalizing their rotation Sunday by shifting Kip Wells to the bullpen, and all but declared Jayson Nix the starter at second base by cutting ties with Marcus Giles.

Technically, the Giles matter remains unresolved, but the Rockies are attempting to trade him to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Giles told teammates goodbye after the Rockies' 8-2 victory over the Dodgers at Hi Corbett Field. He is pulling for a trade, revealing that he would not accept a Triple-A assignment.

http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci_8672916

The Rockies and Hurdle surprised me with sending Wells to the bullpen in ST. I didn't think that they would concede the fact that the 3.1mil signing of Wells was to much, plus the front office don't like to eat that egg on their face before the regular season starts.

Couple quick injury reports... Jason Hirsh has a strained rotator cuff and will be out till at least mid April. Brad Hawpe has been nursing a strained elbow. It's kept him out of games the past 2 weeks but I hear he's finally getting back on track. Other than that, nothing else seems to be newsy...

DENVER (AP)—Cory Sullivan, the Colorado Rockies’ best defensive outfielder, was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Saturday after he was beaten out for the fifth outfielder job by free agent Scott Podsednik.

Right-handed pitcher Ryan Speier and catcher Edwin Bellorin also were optioned to Colorado Springs, and the team said right-handers Jose Capellan and John Towers cleared outright waivers and will report to the Sky Sox.

I was pulling for Sullivan and his glove off the bench, over Podsednik and his speed on the bench. Now that Podsednik has won the job he better show the speed he had before July of 2005 and not the speed which has resulted in only a 58% sucess rate in the SB department since then. If not I guess Sullivan will get called back up again like the last few years.

I was really pulling for Sullivan simply because Podsednik is a jerk. He made a little girl cry a few weeks ago at one of the practice games I went to. And I agree- for his sake, he better work on his timing, as in when to attempt steals.
