Anyone here plan on building the set? It should be out next week, I will be setting up a Trading Thread in the Trading Sub Forum.
Just wanted to announce it here and try to get some interest!

I won't be building the set, but I'm sure I'll be buying some packs...I'll check the thread and am glad to trade cards I have to help you guys complete sets.
Good for autographs? Cool, because 2007 Topps was awful for autographs, and an ugly set overall in my opinion. Plus, the black borders will be tough to keep in nice shape.

I will be trying to build the Yankees team set (and an extra A-Rod for my collection of his cards)! Plus I will need the Pat Neshek card for my collection of his things!

I'll likely buy a few series 1 packs, a few series 2 packs, and then just buy the boxed set (as usual). And does anyone here have those four 2007 Topps Updates & Highlights cards I need (see the Trader Forum)?

Seeing the designs, I'll probably buy a blaster pack or two of Topps, but not much more...there are some nice inserts, but the card design again leaves something to be desired, in my opinion. I swear it seems that the last few Topps sets were designed by first-year graphic design students!
I have to say I'm not too thrilled about the different color circles around the white letters on the team names, looks like they were made by a 10 yr old.

I haven't liked a Topps design since 2005. Whoever is the head of design is steering away from traditional Topps objects like the bat, glove, ball images from years past.

Moving away from tradtion is fine, if the new direction you go in is GOOD. These last few designs have not been anywhere close. I'd love to see the designs they rejected if these are the ones they picked.
I've seen many cards created by people on this site and others that are far superior to these designs.

I too will probably buy a couple blaster boxes of the 2008 sets. I'm not a huge fan of glossy cards like the Topps base cards and Bowman base cards/chrome. I'm a huge fan of the Heritage and A&G cards because they're great for TTM.

These are pretty bad looking, but you should see the 2008 Bowman cards (my dealer got the first sell sheets). Those look pretty classy after a disappointing showing in design last year. The checklist is also a *big* improvement (and 2008 Bowman Chrome's rough draft checklist is pretty incredible, too), though I can't find an online copy. Brian Bixler, Donald Veal, Carlos Triunfel, Max Scherzer, Oscar Tejeda, and John Faso all stick out in my mind as being prominent guys featured.

The cards aren't great, but they're the best offering since 2004, and I can live with that.

Topps has been pushing all their issues back since late 2007. Bowman Draft, Bowman Sterling, Bowman's Best...all got kicked back several weeks in the cases of the former two, several MONTHS in the case of the latter. I'm not sure why (checklist/packaging changes [this was done in the former three cases]?), but Topps is doing this regularly.

Agreed on all accounts. The design this year looks like a Circus poster!

I looked at my local Target this weekend, and they didn't have any. Wonder if they got released to hobby shops only at first? I haven't checked my local card shop yet.

The back design this year is absolutely top-notch. Once of the nicest I've seen since 2004, I would say.

I just checked my local Target and no 2008's yet. They have plenty of '07 Topps Series 1, 2, and Update boxes. From my past exp. it usually takes about a week after the official release date for any product to hit the stores. Also on either Wed/Thurs. the card section gets organized and updated so maybe they just wait until then to put them out.

Chameleon Comics on Maiden Lane in NYC (a block away from the site of the World Trade Center) had them last Friday (February 8). These were Hobby/Home Team Advantage boxes. I thought hobby shops maybe did get them first, however...

I bought some 2008 Topps at the local hoppy shop on Monday. $1.69 for a ten card pack and $9.50 or so for the 45 card blaster pack. Not too bad a price when you compare them to those ridiculous cards that sell for $3 or $4 or MORE per pack. Don't get me started about the ones that charge $3 for 3 cards. What in the heck happened to this hobby? When I was a kid, it was ten cents for a pack of ten cards. A penny a card, and about $7 for a full set. Sure that was a long time ago, but the cards today that sell for $3 per pack for ten cards, come to about $200 for a set. Even with the inflation we have today, that's a ridiculous increase. Not to mention that every manufacturer makes five different sets. And of course, the cards that do go up in "value" get gobbled up by the dealers, just in time to start charging $5+ per pack or $20 for that over hyped rookie.
I did buy 2008 Upper Deck's at a retailer this past weekend.

I finally found some 2008 Topps at the local Target. There was some guy there and I guess he was trying to feel each pack for the game used cards. I watched him for about 5 minutes before I went up to him and said "Just buy the fricking cards!". What a loser! I then grabbed 6 packs that he hadn't gone through and left. When I got home, I opened the packs and guess what I pulled?
A GU Jersey card for Curt Schilling. First time I ever got one in a pack. Woo Hoo! :dance Take that Loser!

Nice Find!! I've seen a couple guys feeling the packs in the past. Its very uncalled for. I've also seen a person or two try to buy the unopened retail box for the price of one pack!! Sometimes Target will have a packs box open, and then another one behind it sealed but clearly stating "For Retail Only, Not to be Sold as One" or something to that degree. It was crazy, this guy tried to buy an entire box for $2.99. The box itself would not scan and the girl at the register asked the guy what the price was. The guy claimed he didn't know but, their was a label that said $2.99. Luckily she ended up not selling them, or I would have had to step in and block the transaction.

I have yet to find a BOX, I went door to door today before work and nothing!!!! My local card shop has been closed for months with no sign on the door or message on the machine. I have to rely on Target and Walmart for my fix now...
Maybe this weekend!

I too went to Target and bought a dozen packs of the 2008 Series 1 and I kind of like them. They look a lot better than the 2006 and 2007 sets. I pulled some nice cards but no luck on relics or AUs. Looking at the checklists, there's some really nice inserts and shortprints to come out this year.
If I saw someone 'feeling-up' the packs individually, I'd tell a manager that they were tampering with the merchandise. I'd be a little ticked off too if I saw someone doing that. Besides, everytime I pulled a relic card from a pack, it was never on the ends....it's usually in the middle of the pack. I could be wrong. Congrats on the nice Schilling card Utter Chaos.

Today Target had some packs in a cardboard display, but no blasters yet. I bought 10 packs and did okay. No Autos or Relics. The sad thing was that I only scored 1 Braves card (Willie Harris). For 10 packs that is the worst I've ever done on # of Braves players and quality of Braves players. C'mon throw me a Smoltz or Chipper, geeezzz.

Bought my first pack at Target yesterday- $1.99 for the standard 10 card pack. Pulled a Dustin Pedroia, Barry Zito and a gold Ryan Braun insert. Also pulled 2 Rockies which I'll get signed- Holliday & Smith. Not bad for $2.

If Topps or any other manufacturer is putting card in packs that can be felt, seen, or anything else that lets people figure out what's in the pack before it's opened, then I blame the manufacturer for that. Not that I excuse the idiot feeling the packs, but the manufacturers sure as heck should know that there are people who do this kind of stuff, and they should do something to insure that there's no funny business with their product.

They generally put the relic cards in the middle of the pack, and packs without a relic card either have a thick "decoy" card, or an extra "regular" card to make up for the thickness of the relic cards.

Found some packs of 2008 Topps at my local Target today (and I hear the local Walmart has '08 UD). Picked up 4 packs of 10 cards for $1.99 each.
The design is not quite as gaudy when you're holding the cards, but I still don't like the "bubbles". The white border is a huge improvement over last year's black ones. At least it's possible to have a 2008 Topps card in mint condition, I'm not sure that can be said for 2007 Topps.
The cards are VERY glossy, which makes them not very good for TTM use, and they have player sigs on them already, another TTM detractor.
There seems to be some inserts that are rather plentiful, as as I got 5 inserts total in 5 packs. Nothing pricy, but it's nice getting something in every pack. I'll post what I got in the pack bustin thread.

Looks like the blaster boxes are out. I saw them at my local Wal-Mart for $19.97. You get 10 packs, 10 cards per pack with 1 extra pack of 6 cards. I guess their not doing the $9.97 boxes, 10 packs 6 cards per pack this year.
