There is a '51 Mantle? Why is it not spoken of as often as the '52? And why is the '52 his RC?

Bowman had all the contracts. The 52 Topps is far more valuable.
Bowman would only be around for a few more years. I think because Topps basically had a monopoly for so long while Bowman would not last and would become pretty much a novelty (until Topps brought them back) is the reason that Mantle card is considered by some a rookie. The 51 Bowman is really his true rookie card, though.

1951 Bowman is Mantles ONLY rookie card. Low grade examples can be had for $1000. Try eBay and buy only a graded example (SGC, PSA, and maybe GAI, BVG) as you are obviously a newbee.
PS Why Mantle????? He is the most over rated player in history. 4 time 100 RBI seasons, averaged 29 HRs a year....... thats special???
Jeff Kent is 2X the player :) (8 time 100 RBI seasons)

Ha ha, I was just stirring up the Bronx "Mantle is the Greatest Ever" guys. The same ones that say Jeter is the Greatest! (What did Jeter do? He led the AL in runs scored 1 time, 10 years ago)
I know both of these players are good, but never should be called the greatest ever of anything.
IMO Pete Rose is the best switch hitter of all time BTW

Get real and google some stats there. He was the Koufax of Power hitters.
Mantle.... The best ever... of "what ifs" or "might have beens"
5 great years, 5 good years, 8 crap
After his 30th birthday the guy had 2 seasons of over 23 homeruns and 1 season with 100 RBIs.
A career with 200+ more strikeouts than RBIs and he batted cleanup
Ruth, Mays, or Bonds now your talking greatest ever!
Sorry to be the eye opener, dont worry, his cards/autographs will always sell for good $$ as long as the Bronx baby boomers are with us.
Dont get into the steroid deal with Bonds, Mantle popped greenies like candy his whole career

There is only one Mantle, the most popular player of the last 60 years, and there is only one true Mantle rookie card - the 1951 Bowman. The Topps is bigger and its the card company that people know now because its still in existance, but in reality, the 51 Bowman really is the true rookie.
I got one about 6 weeks ago on Ebay, a PSA-1, for just under a grand, and its worth it. I hold it in my hand and just go "WOW". The most I have ever spent on a card, but it was worth it.
Now I am working on my wife to buy me a 1952 Topps Mantle, which would also be a PSA-1, but unfortunetly they are going for about 4 times what the 1951 Bowman goes for.
There is one way to get it though, and I have done this before. I saw on Ebay a few years ago an awesome replica of Joe Torre's 1996 World Series Championship ring, I mean this thing passes for the original, but it was $2500 and I cant afford that. I told my wife to buy it for me, and it would be all my presents for 2 years - birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, Valentines, etc. Since we spend about half the value of that ring a year on each other when you add up all the gifts we give, this seemed like a good idea, and it did to her too. She got me the ring, I didnt get any gifts for two years, and I was in heaven. I wear the ring and people always ask me if I am in the Yankee organization, and once I was in Tampa when the Yankees were in town and the manager of a restaurant saw it and no matter what I said he wouldnt believe I wasnt with the Yankees, and he kept walking by the table to try to recognize me! Now I just play along and tell people I am in the front office and they are happy! But that was a digression, I was trying to make the point that if you are willing to give up other gifts, you can get something expensive - put it on plastic and pay it off over the two years that you dont get anything else!
