This is pretty neat. See the little kid sitting on his father's lap with a Buffalo Sabres jersey? It was confirmed by the Buffalo News to be Patrick Kane, the #1 pick in the 2007 NHL draft, currently playing (and playing very well) for the Chicago Blackhawks. He was about 5 or 6 at the time. The card is from 1994. One of them sold for $86 on ebay, but others have sold for quite a bit less.
I know of two baseball cards that increased in price because of a person in the background.
-1971 Topps Chris Short w/Pete Rose
-that altered Derek Jeter card w/Mantle and Dubya
Any others?

Ken Griffey Sr. had a Upper Deck card in the early '90s that still books for about 10 X what his other cards from the period because junior is on the card with him. It's not really in the background, but still adds substantial value to the card.

That is awesome! Now, this is a situation where they just happened to be in the background at the time the photo was taken, and they just happened to be included on the card.

Those don't fall in the same category, especially the 2007 Topps Jeter. I'd be more impressed with a card that showed someone in the background who, at the time the photo was taken, was a "nobody" who later became "somebody."

I thought about asking that, but I just figured that it's never happened before.

Good Call. Your thinking of the '91 UD Griffey Sr. card that shows him staring down the young Jr.

I think we've all missed one...1960 Topps 1959 World Series Luis Aparicio. The card books for FAR more than any other card in the set not due to Aparicio, but Maury Wills...who would take all of seven more years to appear on a Topps card and three to appear on a very desirable 1963 Fleer card.
Another one like that is the 1970 Topps Mets World Champions Celebration Card...with Nolan Ryan in it.

Here's a pic of the Griffey card.
And, then there's the 1990 Sam Vincent basketball card which shows Michael Jordan in the foreground. The card became valuable because Jordan had his jersey stolen that day and is pictured wearing a #12 jersey, instead of #23.

It was card #389 - World Series Game 5 - Luis swipes base.
I did some research on Game 5 and discovered the Aparicio didn't steal a base in that game. According to the play by play on retrosheet.org he did this:
WHITE SOX 1ST: Aparicio was called out on strikes
WHITE SOX 3RD: Aparicio singled to left [Phillips to third, Aparicio out at second (left to third to second)];
WHITE SOX 6TH: Aparicio singled to center; Lollar forced Aparicio (shortstop to second);
WHITE SOX 8TH: Aparicio grounded out (second to first)
So the picture on the card is either from a different game or could be from the 3rd or 6th inning where Aparicio got out at second. However, in both of those cases it was the 2B (Charlie Neal) covering second and not Wills.

Good memory you've got there. :happy: I forgot about those.

I was on a card once. I was sitting in the center field bleachers at the game featured on the attached card. I'm the one with dark hair. :p

Looks like you're right. This site agrees with that...

"A couple of collectors have pointed to card # 389 "Aparicio Swipes Base" as an inadvertent "rookie card" of Maury Wills (who was then refusing to sign a contract with Topps because they apparently snubbed him as a rookie), saying that Wills is the Dodger infielder covering second. A closer look at the card to the lower right, however, shows that the player is actually Dodger second baseman Charley Neal."

"However, in both of those cases it was the 2B (Charlie Neal) covering second and not Wills."
Either they colorized the photo to the point where Neal was unrecognizable or just used a random photo of Aparicio sliding that happened to feature Maury Wills. Topps has always insisted the player is Wills and has even reprinted the card as such. Some people who've actually looked at the photo and examined the Neal claims say it couldn't be him.

Really? I was there too. I'm the guy holding up the bottom left corner of the flag. No jokes about my hair, please. I was just having a bad hair day. :eek:

I'm bumping this thread because I'm puzzled as to why I can't find the Patrick Kane card for sale on Sportlots or on ebay. Anyone know why? I would think there must be at least one person that would at least TRY to sell it for $50 (or whatever it's worth these days). What gives?
