There must be a graphic of proper technique online somewhere. You just cross your leg underneath. The momentum and rolling of your leg makes your body pop up.

thanks TG and I didnt learn due to bad coaching apparently they did 1 practice a year to learn sliding and this summer league we had 2 practices over the course of 9 weeks... Highschool coaches dont teach it cuz they think we already know which most people do.

Sometimes you have to take accountability for yourself and not blame others for what you haven't learned. You should have learned a pop up in preteen ball or asked someone to help you.

I wasnt interested in learning one and it didnt seem important at the time... I know how to slide just not pop up, little league like I said we did 1 or 2 practices a season based on sliding no popups. Our league actually outlawed stealing after my last season cuz there was too many 20-15 games. I do blame it part on myself for not seeking advice.

Poppup sliding isnt really something that is "taught" either. Its basically something you automatically do. I guess a coach could "teach" it, but i think thats wasted practice time.

Practicing proper sliding technique is not a waste of time. A waste of time is a player missing a season injuring himself sliding improperly. Some kids pick up sliding naturally. Others need instruction. Learning how to do a slide by/reach and tag can be the difference between winning and losing on a close play. As a coach I place heavy emphasis on base running.

Disagree - I teach it indoors with a sliding mat.

TG is right we won two games last year using a slide by/reach and tag. It was a beautiful thing.

James pop up sliding is easy, you slide regularly then you pop up... its not that hard!

Not exactly, if he sees a hook slide as sliding regularly. But it isn't difficult. Just slide to the base with one leg tucked under.
While I realize sliding head first is the in thing, players should know how to hook slide with either leg as to go to each side of the base and a hook slide. I've never liked sliding head first. The runner has to scramble to his feet instead of pop up. Ankles are a lot sturdier than fingers and hands in terms of getting jammed. I preferred rather get spiked on the lower leg than the hands or wrist. I was never real fond of getting a glove in the face on the follow through of the tag.
My son learned the hard way about about going head first into home. He got a face full of shinguards when the catcher blocked the plate. I remember trying to truck a 6'4", 225 pound catcher head first in Legion when it was legal. I was 6'1", 175. Ever seen those Roadrunner cartoons where Wile E. Coyote slams into mountains?

Sliding is soooo much fun. One of the best parts of baseball. It happens so fast. The hook slides, pop-up slides, everything. I love sliding so much!

I agree head sliding is a dangerous and good way to break something or even get paralyzed if you aren't doing it get back on a pickoff ---- Derek Jeter. I don't even go in head first if I'm plowing over a catcher use those arms haha --- but not if the catcher is huge compaired to you just hook slide haha. Now one thing on popup slides .... Do not do them during a double play or something where you can affect another play because according to the rules you will cause the other person to get out. Definately is illegal in highschool and the NCAA just allowed the players to do it as of last year but still illegal in NAIA.

We also teach it on grass outside when it rains.
