View Full Version : The Pack Break Thread

I'd like to try a different spin on two old standards - box breaks and pack pulls. Instead of listing the good cards from a pack (pack pulls) or a box (box break), I thought we could post here all the cards from an individual pack. This way, the next time you're standing in line at a store and feel the urge to make an impulse purchase, you can know what you're getting into. :cap:

With your post, please try to list:

the year and set
each card
any commentary you want to give :)

Let's have fun!

I'll get things started here with a pack I picked up at Target yesterday.

2007 Topps Updates and Highlights Retail (12 cards)

Tony Abreu RC
Rick Vanden Hurk RC
Wilfredo Ledezma
Nathan Haynes RC
Kevin Melillo RC
J.P. Howell
Brendan Harris
Jason Smith
Jorge Julio Gold Parallel
J.D. Durbin
Jose Reyes AS
Derek Jeter AS

Card of the Pack:
33160

I was pretty happy with this pack. Hitting a gold parallel is always nice (I can usually flip them for a buck at least) and I got some players I've actually heard of.

Okay, so I actually bought two. :)

2007 Topps Update and Highlights Retail (12 cards)

Chad Gaudin
Kevin Frandsen
A.J. Pierzynski
Dan Wheeler
Willie Harris
Mark Teixeira
Justin Germano
Ryan Doumit
Curtis Granderson Generation NOW Double #1
Bobby Jenks AS
Takashi Saito AS
David Wright AS

Card of the Pack:
33161

I'm glad the Generation NOW is a Tiger (I'll give it to my dad, a Tigers fan). Otherwise, it'd be just another silly mirror card. My favorite of the pack is Doumit - I just think it's a great action pic.

Opened up some stocking stuffer packs.

First, Turkey Red.

2007 Topps Turkey Red Retail (8 cards)

107 Mickey Mantle
96 Derrek Lee
175 Lance Berkman
105 Phil Hughes RC
144 Jermaine Dye
20 Alex Rodriguez Ad Back SP (!!!)
18 B.J. Upton
92 Homer Bailey RC

Card of the Pack
33398

I don't really care for the design of Turkey Red. The grainy, bumpy finish seems to make the pictures hard to see. What I can't complain about, though, is pulling Bailey and Hughes. And the A-Rod parallel, which I had to look up to figure out what it was.

All cards but A-Rod are up for trade. PM me if interested.

BoofBonser26

Next, Goudey.

2007 Upper Deck Goudey Retail (8 cards)

44 Greg Maddux G
37 Edgar Renteria G
144 Mike Sweeney G
168 Orlando Cabrera G
49 Jake Peavy R
63 Johan Santana R
114 Frank Thomas R
138 Gary Matthews R

Card of the Pack
33399

The colors all seem to be muted, which I suppose is intentional, but I think this set would look better with vibrant colors, like the backgrounds. Pulling Peavy followed by Santana is pretty cool (and Maddux led off the pack).

But take a look at that scowl by Sweeney. Grrrrrrrr!

Again, all cards up for trade. PM me.

Last but not least, the best pack, Bowman Heritage.

2007 Bowman Heritage Retail (8 cards)

190 Alex Rodriguez
50 Albert Pujols
160 Carl Crawford (thick shinny parallel, I assume one per pack?)
BHP36 Brandan Katin
BHP10 Chris Carter
219 Michael Bourn RC
155 Jimmy Rollins
23 Carlos Delgado

Card of the Pack
33400

I opened up the pack, saw A-Rod, and thought "nice start." I flipped over A-Rod, saw Pujols, and started laughing. After pulling the best two position players in baseball, the pack had nowhere to go but down, but I didn't mind.

All cards up for trade. PM me.

Pack #8

Turning Two CL #176
Justin Morneau #90
Miguel Cabrera #180
Ryan Zimmerman #127
Juan Pierre #81
Tyler Clippard RC #75

Card of the pack - not much here to be excited about...but after the last pack, anything would have been a let down.

The Gordon card of course makes this an awesome session of pack opening, but even without that great card, I think I did OK in this box. I got a Mantle insert, a nice stack of stars, another of rookies, and even the commons are nice looking.

Looking at the Beckett after opening the Turkey Red cards, I see there are some short prints and "Ad back" cards....I don't think I pulled any...but what do they look like?

BoofBonser26

Here's an Ad Back card:

I pulled an A-Rod ad back but couldn't sell it on eBay. It's up for trade, if anyone wants it.

And that was a sweet pull on the Gordon auto! Thanks for sharing.

Cool...thanks for posting the picture. I didn't get any ad back cards. Anyone know if SP's are somehow marked?

Yeah, the Gordon is a nice pull. I'm not sure yet whether I'll keep it, trade it, try to sell, or what. Probably sit on it a few days before making the call.

Yesterday we were in Target, and my fiancee stopped to buy some greeting cards. Since I know that can be a lengthy process, I excused myself to look at some cards of a different kind. I ended up buying three packs of cards I hadn't bought any of yet this year. Let's open 'em up!

'07 UD Masterpeices (4 cards, $2.99)

Hanley Ramirez #56
Sandy Koufax #17
Randy Johnson #48
Chase Utley #33

Card of the pack - Koufax (bv $5)

Nice pack overall...3 of the 4 cards list in Beckett, and the 4th (Ramirez) is of a great young player. The cards are painting, no photos, and have a cool look to them. I bet they'd look nice autographed.

'07 Topps '52 Rookies (6 cards, $2.99)

Mark Reynolds #80
Delmon Young #70
Alejandro De Aza #23
Arod "Road to 500" insert #ARHR479
Justin Upton #170
Ryan Feierabend #152

Card of the pack - Arod

Carry the look of the classic 52 Topps set. Another set great for autos. These are listed in my Beckett yet, so tough to know how good a pack it is...Upton and Young are the names I know...are the other rookies any good?

'07 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects (7 cards, $2.99)

Kyle Kendrick #BDP47
Mike Rabelo BDP#14
Jason Monti (Chrome) #BDPP47
Adrian Cardenas (Chrome)# BDPP93
Brian Stokes (Gold) #BDP37
Karl Bolt #BDPP2
Evan Longoria #BDPP99

Card of the pack - ???

Man, not often you open a pack of 7 cards and get 4 distinctly different looking cards...I'm still figuring out what's what and who's who....so it'll take some time (and a price guide) to figure out what I got.

Overall, three fun pack breaks. The UD Masterpeices was well worth the price, time will tell on the other two.

I love baseball but they REALLY gotta improve their packs. I haven't pulled squat from them recently. As opposed to tonight's football & basketball haul

NBA 07 Trademark Moves-Jermaine O'Neal, Vince Carter, Kevin Garnett, Elton Brand, oh yeah and DJ Strawberry rookie #/1999

NFL
07 Donruss Threads-Braylon Edwards, TO, Edgerrin James, oh yeah Tom Brady and Corey Dillon Gridiron King

07 Donruss Rookies & Stars:
Pack 1-Anthony Thomas, Jay Cutler, Steve Smith, Larry Johnson, oh yeah Ladanian Tomlinson and Donovan McNabb jersey piece
Pack 2-Brodie Croyle, Maurice Jones-Drew, Javon Walker, Warrick Dunn, oh yeah Tom Brady and Anquan Boldin jersey piece
Pack 3-Cedric Benson, Cadillac Williams, Santana Moss, Drew Brees, oh yeah Peyton Manning and Dress for Success Trent Edwards helmet piece #/300
Pack 4-Ronnie Brown, Lendale White, Brian Westbrook, Hines Ward, oh yeah Brett Favre and Lamont Jordan jersey piece

I won't post any more non-baseball here unless someone wants to see it, but I rarely come anywhere close to this with baseball

Picked up another pack of 2007 Topps '52 Rookies today when I stopped at the card shop to snag some top loaders.

Here's how the pack broke down:

Homer Bailey #90
Jenson Lewis #103
Alberto Arias #82
Cory Doyne Certified Auto#52S-CD
Delmon Young #70
Brandon Wood #183
Cesar Jimenez #147
Cory Doyne #111

The certified auto is certainly the card of the pack, although some of the other cards have potential, as well. Interested to see what the Doyne is worth. Anyone know anything about him as a prospect?

Dalkowski110
01-23-2008, 04:16 PM
Jensen Lewis and Alberto Arias are true rookie cards. Cesar Jimenez is too, technically, at least as of now, but also had a 2006 Bowman Chrome card which may get reclassified as a RC. Doyne is an old journeyman, a Quad-A closer who may see some more action next year, but he does hold one interesting mark: the single season saves record in Norfolk Tides team history.

"I love baseball but they REALLY gotta improve their packs."

If you're an insert guy like I think you are, they won't anytime soon. The MLBPA stepped in in late 2005 and basically ruled that all sets from 2006 onward had to have severely reduced insert sets (translating to awful insert sets). Oh, their own special rookie cards (see thread "Why Your Rookie Card May Not Be a Rookie Card). And fewer sets in general.

A couple weeks ago I bought an 8-pack box of Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects from Target for $20. The first good sign I saw was that this bonus box had the same odds for inserts as individual packs, which is unusual.

This was BY FAR the best pulls I had ever gotten from a bonus box. And as I don't remember every single card I got I'll just summarize the highlights.

Joba Chamberlain - BDP18 Chrome card
Joba Chamberlain - BDP18 Gold thick card
Joba Chamberlain - BDPP71 All-star futures GU JSY
Brandon Allen - SOF-BA Signs of the Future SIG
Kory Casto - BDP38 Chrome Refractor
Ryan Pope - BDPP45 Chrome Refractor

Hey All;

I've been opening numerous packs of the 2007 Bowman Heritage, sorry i didnt write the details down, but I have seen variationa such as no signiture and the "Rookie Card" in different corners. Has any one come across these also and have any information on them?

BTW; I have pulled some really nice cards from the retail and hobby packs.
Including "pieces of the game" bat cards from two retail packs.

thanks in advance

"Bowman Gold
Tim Lincecum"

Actually, I'd have to say that's the best card you got of any of your Bowman Draft cards. Gold parallel doesn't bring as much as Chrome, I'll grant you, but it brings more than regular and that's Lincecum's true rookie card. Though it's also Gordon's in the most technical sense, Gordon had a 2006 Bowman card and a 2006 Bowman Chrome card that significantly outprice the '07 BDP card (or any other of his Gordon's "RC's" this year).

Well, once. It was an interesting scene, actually...

But the guys who look for inserts in say, 2007 Donruss Elite Extra Edition or 2007 TriStar or some of the higher grade Upper Deck inserts generally feel for them. However, we did get one guy with a pocket-sized set of calipers who tried measuring the width of the packs and he did well.

Bought my first 4 packs of 2008 Topps today at Target (10 cards/$1.99).

Pack 1:

Odalis Perez
Justin Ruggiano RC
AL BA Leaders

Card of the pack: The Votto, even though I'm not exactly sure what insert set this is.

Pack 2:

A-rod MVP
Kyle Kendrick
Boof Bosner
Todd Helton
Shannon Stewart
Jason Hirsh
Mark Buehrle Year in Review Insert
Jorge Sosa
Kurt Suzuki
Chris Burke

Card of the pack - probably A-rod, becuase the Buehrle card is from an insert set seeded 1:6

Pack 3:

Roger Clemens
Jeff Kent
Billy Wagner
Rafael Soriano
Andy LaRoche
Dwight Gooden All-Rookie 50th Insert
Mickey Mantle HR History 509th HR Insert
Marlon Anderson

Seems like you were pretty successful... I can't wait to get a box of the Topps.... after that we might can do a Sox for Yankees trade... My fiance said she is going to give me a box of Topps for Valentines Day (once our local Wal-Mart/Target gets them in)! When we first started dating 5 years ago she gave me like 10 packs of cards... what a good way to start! :dance

A Sox for Yanks trade sounds good.

I'm sure I'll grab a few more Topps and definately some Upper Deck. I believe Topps Heritage comes out in about a week, as well...I'll probably buy a bunch of those if I can find 'em.

That's cool that your fiancee is getting you a box of cards. Mine has been the one checking at the local Targets and Walmarts for the 2008's for me...she goes shopping a lot more often than I do! We were at Target yesterday with a couiple friends who wanted to pick up Guitar Hero. My fiancee came up to me with the 4 packs of Topps cards before I even found the card section.

I got my hands on my first packs of '08 Topps today! And wow oh wow, the first two packs sure didn't disappoint! :cap:

Pack 1
3 Jeff Suppan
59 Grady Sizemore Postseason Highlights
288 Rodriguez/Verlander Classic Combos
214 C.J. Wilson
23 Chin-Lung Hu RC
AR46 Derek Jeter 50th Anniversary All-Star Rookie Team
TCP12 Steve Pearce
33 Joe Mauer
280 Willie Randolph
270 C.C. Sabathia

Card of the Pack: Sizemore postseason highlights (take that, Yankees! :highfive:)
35872

Two Indians (:dance), two Tigers (one one card), two sweet inserts. Now that's a winning pack. (Oh, and two pitchers with initialisms for first names)

Pack 2
128 Kenny Lofton Postseason Highlights
26 Manny Ramirez Postseason Highlights
24 AL RBI Leaders
146 Aaron Hill
79 Omar Vizquel
165 Tim Lincecum
10 Miguel Cabrera Gold 1350/2008
236 Joe Koshansky RC
239 Richie Sexson
114 Mike Fontenot

Card of the Pack: Miguel Cabrera Gold
35873

Another Indian (:dance), a killer Tiger, a personal favorite (Omar!), and a nifty leader card. This pack is another winner.

I love this year's Topps set. The design is top-notch. It's my favorite since '04. I love the circles and the white borders. I only have two little criticisms about the front design - that the stupid Topps logo indents the border like that (but I've come to expect that), and that there's no position listed on the front of the card. Overall, though, those are minor complaints. As for the backs of the cards, I'm completely in love.

I like how they have pictures of the stat leaders all in the same pose (at least, it's that way on the AL RBI card I pulled).

35874

The signatures on the base cards look nice, too. All the inserts I've pulled so far also have clean, pleasing designs. I give this year's Topps set an A.

Hmmm...my next two packs of 2008 Topps certainly didn't keep up the standards set by the first two.

I've come up with a rating system for packs for fun - I think it's a pretty good reflection of how I feel about packs. Here it is:

----------
+5 points
GU/auto

+2 points
Indians
Boof Bonser

+1 point
Tigers
insert

.5 points
RCs
star

0 points
common card

-0.5 points
duplicates

-1 point
damaged
A-Rod/Mantle continuity
----------

Pack 3
Dustin McGowan (0)
Andruw Jones (+0.5)
Norris Hopper (0)
So Taguchi (0)
Paul Konerko (+0.5)
Matt Capps (0)
Miguel Cabrera Own the Game (+1)
Wes Helms (0)
Eric Wedge (+2)
Gavin Floyd (-1) [dinged corner]

Pack Rating: +3

Pack 4
Alex Rodriguez MVP (+0.5)
Kyle Kendrick (0)
NL Saves Leaders (0)
Paul Konerko (-0.5) [duplicate]
Matt Capps (-0.5) [duplicate]
Joey Votto RC (+0.5)
Ichiro TCP11 (+1)
Rafael Furcal (0)
Jorge Sosa (0)
Kurt Suzuki (0)

Pack Rating: 1

For the record, the ratings on my first two packs were (with the next two added at the end):

Pack 1: +8.5
Pack 2: +5.5
Pack 3: +3
Pack 4: +1

Hmm. That's not a good trend. :hp The streak of Indians cards ended with the 4th pack. :candle:

The pack started out nicely with some good cards, but the string of duplicates prevented this pack from getting anything other than a mediocre rating.

Here's my final tally:

Pack 1: +8.5
Pack 2: +5.5
Pack 3: +3
Pack 4: +1
Pack 5: +4
Pack 6: +1.5
Pack 7: +3
Pack 8: 0
Pack 9: +5.5
Pack 10: +1.5
Average Pack Rating: +3.35

I'm very happy with the cards I got from these packs. A great number of Indians and Tigers, a nice number of inserts, a Campaign '08 card (even if it's Huckabee), and, of course, Boof Bonser! :)

I'll definitely be buying more of these.

Hmmm...my next two packs of 2008 Topps certainly didn't keep up the standards set by the first two.

I've come up with a rating system for packs for fun - I think it's a pretty good reflection of how I feel about packs. Here it is:

----------

+2 points
Boof Bonser

+1 point
insert

-1 point
A-Rod/Mantle continuity
----------
At least you're not prejudiced :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Yeah, I knew right away to make sure it was my rating system, not any objective measure. :shhh::):highfive:

Marco Scutaro (-0.5) [duplicate]

Dang, I'm sorry there weren't any left! The things must be flying off the shelves, no-one can find any there and I assure you after I took my 10 packs there were plenty left.

Picked up two 2008 Topps Hobby Packs today from my local dealer ($2.50 for 10 cards).

Pack 1:

Kaz Matsui NLCS
Jeff Clement RC
Ryan Klesko
Zach Duke
Rafael Soriano
Andy LaRoche
Price Fielder Own the Game Insert
Lenny DiNardo
Radhames Liz RC
Phil Hughes

Card of the pack: Fielder. It's worth noting, that this is the second time I've gotten LaRoche and Soriano in the same pack, and the second time I've gotten Clement and Klesko in the same pack.

Pack 2:

David DeJesus
Bobby Jenks
Curtis Granderson
Jim Edmonds
Bobby Cox
Andrew Jones 50th Anniversary Rookie
Hunter Pence Trading Card History
Eric Wedge
Gavin Floyd
Ross Ohlendorf RC

Card of the pack: Pence.

Three inserts in two packs is nice, and makes up for the collating issues. I hate how glossy these cards are, be interested if they have any usefulness for TTM purposes.
