What does a Clemens rookie card go for these days? I'm talking mint condition.

1984 Fleer Update Clemens in mint condition, I saw go for over 1,000 dollars on ebay on Monday or Tuesday... Usually ungraded ones go for 150-200 bucks... for the first time since I have been collection Clemens, one went for under 100 today...

As a side note, since most of you guys know I am a huge collector of Justice and Clemens... I was very happy to hear the comments made by Justice today, there is no doubt in my mind that everything he said was the truth and I am still very much going to collect his stuff!!! I want to hear more from the Clemens camp, however, I believe in innocent until proven guilty.

What about a 84' Topps?

His first Topps card was the 1985 Topps. I have seen those go ungraded for under 10 quite a few times... I got mine for like 4 one night at 4 in the morning...

His 85 cards are all right around the same in market value... I am not real sure of the book value.

I haven't really looked for Sheff much, but I don't think his rookies were going for that much (prob 5 bucks or less + shipping but that is a total guess). I have a few of his rookies, I should check out to see what kind of value they have.

It wouldn't surpise me if a lot of stars card went down because of this, even one's not mentioned in the report. People may not want to invest in someone who could be revealed to be a cheat over the next few years.

Yeah, I can't blame people for that... I haven't really looked at my Clemens stuff since Thursday...............

A few months ago I bought a graded 1984 Fleer Update Clemens card for just under $200 (PSA-7 or 8, I forget which), figuring that he was about to retire and I thought his cards would just go up in value, particularly when he was elected to the hall. I am not an investor, i was just worried about having to pay more for the card down the road.

Now the stupid Mitchell Report (http://www.baseball-almanac.com/legendary/Mitchell_Report.shtml), and the prices are dropping.........

Oh well, you can't win them all. :grouchy

I still love Clemens by the way, and to me, this was just the drug era, and you had pitchers on drugs throwing to batters on drugs, and it was entertaining as hell. There, that's a good rationalization.

Sorry to say I don't agree with the last part. There is no rationalization for using illegal drugs...period. Time will tell what actually happened.

As for the rookie card, whenever you invest any amount of money into a sports card you will see price fluctuations. In the "steroid era" you have a tendency to see steep peaks and valleys. Take a look at the McGwire rookie. In 1998 that card was going for $250-$500 +...now it's a $25-$30 card. How many of those do you actually see being flipped at that price today? For those of you who invested heavily in Clemens I hope all turns out well for you and those investments.

Never throw all your money into one active player. The market is WAY too volatile. If you invest in a *single* player, make sure he's pre-1980, because the card WILL NOT lose value. The farther back you go from there, the more your investment is likely to go up. Although current cards have gone down in terms of production from the levels of the late 1980's-early 1990's and even up through about 2000, the key rookie cards are of active players who 1) may or may not have used steroids (and like it or not, steroids is a value killer) and 2) may still come apart at the seems (Exhibit A: Angel Berroa, for anyone who invested in his cards. He won the AL RoY. Exhibits B, C, and D: Jody Gerut, Val Pascucci, and Noochie Varner, for anyone who invested in their cards. All were labelled "can't miss" prospects. Anyone remember the days of Noochie Varner's cards outselling those of two other guys in that 2002 Bowman Draft set, David Wright and Ryan Howard? Or power-hitting Val Pascucci out-selling fellow 2001 Topps Traded checklist-mate Jose Reyes?).

What about jersey cards of Clemens? Are they bound to lose value now as well? I have a handful of his Yankee jersey cuts from 00-04.

Yep. His game-used cards and signed stuff also took a nosedive in terms of value.
