View Full Version : houston buffs
Did the Houston Buffs move to another city in the Texas League when the Colt 45's came to Houston. They had to be owned by someone or an organization. Thanks.

See the following link for historical information on the Texas League:

The Texas League has had many franchises, franchise moves and franchises going belly up in its 100+ year history.

Welcome to Baseball Fever, gale!
Here's another link that may provide some more answers to your questions:

And I'm sure our resident Houston Historian, Pop Top, will have a wealth of information about those teams.

The Buffs left the Texas League after the 1958 season and were replaced by Tulsa as the Cardinals' affiliate. The Buffs continued in the American Association in 1959 with no affiliation and 1960 and 1961 as a Cub farm before joining the National League as an expansion team beginning in 1962.

Not really much more I can add on this query ... Ol' Yeller and Ram Man have already provided a pair of excellent links on the subject ... The Buffs were the first professional baseball team I saw play, but I really don't remember much about that game ... Mom says I played under the stands a lot and came home with about gazillion skeeter bites.

When the Buffs entered the AA in 1959 who owned them if they were not affliated. I assume in 1969-1961 that Cubs picked up the tab.

I don't really know that answer, Gale ... I will put the question to a few Astro Heads and see what they say ... Could take a few days or so ... In the meantime, your best bet might be the main downtown branch of the Houston Library if you're anywhere near that locale ... Or just hang out here at Baseball Fever and visit some of the other Forums while I see what I can find out.

I'll never forget the first major league game I seen was between the New York Giants and the Cleveland Indians in Buff
stadium and a young lefty for Cleveland was pitching name of Herb Score. I thought later on it was childhood impression that his speed was unbelievable but later on when he retired Hank Aaron was asked who was the fastest he had ever faced. Herb Score. But for a line drive......

Gale --- Sorry, but so far I've come up with nothing on the Buffs ownership question ... I no longer live in Houston, otherwise you've got me so interested I'd go down to the big library downtown and research it for you.
Will keep looking ... In the meantime, hope to see you around Fever and the Astros Forum during the season :waving

gale, go to http://pub45.ezboard.com/bastrosbaseball, and call out a guy named Buff.....If he can't get you the answer, nobody can. He is a walking history book when it comes to baseball in general and the Buffs in particular..He has just had a book published, "The Kid from St. Louis" about Jerry Witte, an old Buff player. Let me know how you make out...

They ceased to exist in the 1960's, I don't see an "official" website anytime soon.

The Houston Buffs' 20 year old phenom, Dizzy Dean, shakes
hands with 43 year old Ray Caldwell of the Birmingham Barons
just prior to their faceoff in the opener of the 1931 Dixie Series.

I thought the houston buffs were a Texas nudist group.

i think Jo Russell probably has all the rosters for the Buffs from the late 40's to the late 50's. if my old memory isnt too faded, i think the Buffs became the AAA Houston Rangers when Chicago bought the team. Ron Santo played for us and a few other soon to be Cubbies. Trivia question: who played for the AA and AAA Buffs and Colt 45's? Pidge Browne for sure. (Maybe Al Papai and Bobby Tiefenauer too) oops cant get the delete button to work:ebd
